There were a number of first names listed as "Babe" which were infants less than one year old and even a few very young children. In some families, a baby was not always given a first name right after being born. A few "Babes" were way past year one before their parents settled on that just right, special first name for their child. Cousin Wylodean says she was almost two before she was given a proper first name -- and still lovingly fusses at her Mama about it. On the 1870 Census babies born within the year, less than one year old, were listed under the age category by a fraction of 12 months. The 12th month being June, 1870. These babies would have been born after June 1, 1869 and before June 1, 1870. Basically, a baby listed with age of 2/12 would have been born in April, 1870 -- two months before June 1870. Babies born after June 1, 1870 would not be counted in the 1870 Census. Some of the fractions in the Census do not match the month the baby was born in but it gets confusing counting back from June and then it depends what day of the month it is. Rule of thumb, it goes like this: 1/12 = Born May, 1870
