Praters Chapel (Old Warrington) Cemetery

Location of the cemetery is as follows: From Clifton, TN take Linden Highway 128 to Morrison Creek Road Highway 228. Approximately 1 to 2 miles Praters Chapel Church is on the left side of the road, the cemetery is behind the Church. There is a road around the cemetery and through the middle. We divided the cemetery into 4 sections. Section 1 (new section) is outside the perimeter of the road to the north. Section 2 is from the back by the woods to the grave of Rosanna Warrington (oldest tombstone in the cemetery). Section 3 from Rosanna to the road west (Jeter Road). Section 4 is by Highway 228 behind the church and southeast of the picnic area. Comments are by writers.

(NOTE – My grandmother, Dorothy Helen Hoke is buried there. She is listed as Dorothy H. Coxwell. Coxwell was the name she kept after her divorce from her third husband, Fred V. Coxwell. Her stone reads: Coxwell, Dorothy H., 1905-1981. She was born in New York November 21, 1905 and died in Clifton, Tennessee March 10, 1981. Dorothy Hoke lived in Clifton, Tennessee from 1977 or 1978 until her death.

“Two markers near the grave read: M.E.P. and C.P.P. On a foot stone C.P.P.”

“C.P.P.” denotes the markers for my father Claude Penrod Perry (he is the son of Dorothy Hoke’s marriage to her second husband, Claude Roland Perry, who she divorced in 1937). The other denotes the marker for my mother, Mary Elizabeth Clanton. Both of my parents are alive and well currently in Chattahoochee, Fl where Mom works for the State of Florida as a Psychiatric Nurse and Dad is in retirement. – Claude P Perry II, 10 June 2008.)

Pinhook-Lutts Cemetery

This is an updated enumeration prepared by the Lutts Extension Homemakers Club in 1987. (The cemetery has been brought up to date as of 5 September 2007 by Reba Wilbanks. New additions since the 1987 enumeration has been added at the end.)

Location: The cemetery is approximately 3/4 mile west of Lutts, high upon a hill overlooking the Weatherford Creek valley. The cemetery is on Tennessee Highway 203 and is to the south, boardering the highway.

This cemetery had its beginning in February 1877. The spot was selected and donated for a cemetery by James Hiram STRICKLIN when one of his sons died.

James W. “Jim” STRICKLIN, son of James Hiram and Nancy Caroline DANIEL STRICKLIN was the first person buried in the old part. Jim was born April 26, 1857 and died January 16, 1877.

About 1947, the Lutts Community Club bought land off the same tract, at the time owned by Daniel WHITAKER, for cemetery use. This has been referred to as the “new part”.

The first person buried in this section was John Marshall SINCLAIR who was buried January 3, 1952.

In 1987, two new additions were added. The Franks addition came off the same tract of land as the rest of the cemetery. The Robbins addition came from the Joe ROBBINS farm just across the road from the present cemetery.

The enumeration is done by sections: “New Part”, “Old Part”, and “Robbins Addition”. The enumeration is given row by row, grave by grave in each row.

The Gallaher Cemetery is located east of the Natchez Trace Parkway northeast of Collinwood, Tennessee. To reach the cemetery turn east off the parkway just south of the Lower Glenrock rest area. Turn onto Glen Rock Rd. aka (Factory Creek Rd.) (Co. Rd. 1767 and travel 1 mile. The cemetery is on the left of the road. There are about one half dozen unknown graves here. One grave has a stone with what appears to have information etched into the stone, however it is not legible. This enumeration is current as of 10 May 2012.

The Clifton City Cemetery lies between Main Street and the new highway #114. To reach the cemetery, travel Main Street into Clifton, turning left onto Elm Street. Travel through two 4-way-stops for .3 mile. Turn left onto Walnut Street and travel .2 mile. The cemetery is on the hill. This enumeration was done in sections. Section “A” was enumerated row-by-row starting on the first row near the large pine tree and going south. This section is located on the immediate right traveling up the hill. Section “B” & “C” were regretfully done in alphabetical order due to random grave locations especially in section “B”. This enumeration was completed March 21, 2011

Butler, Henry Arthur

BUTLER, HENRY ARTHUR, was born 7 Aug 1890 ,the son of Thompson C. BUTLER (6 May 1860 – 26 Nov 1942, buried Punhook Cem.) and Mary Hulda HAY (25 Jan 1863 – 1 May 1910, buried in Decatur Co.,TN). He was inducted in 1917 at Waynesboro, TN. He served in Frances as a medic. His siblings were Omer Witt BUTLER, Benjamin Harrison BUTLER, Reuben Vernor BUTLER, Terry Cordelia BUTLER and William Hobart BUTLER.

His part in the Medical Corps was to go behind the fighting and help the wounded and to care for the dead. He fought in the battles of Rhine River, Argonne Forest and along the Meuse, from Verdun to Sedan, from 26 Sep 1918 through Armistice.

The Battles of Argonne Firest, September 27 – October 10, 1918, were a series of fierce and decisive battles. Twelve divisions of the American Army broke through the supposedly impenetrable German line. This was a rocky wilderness where there were barbed wire entanglements.

Henry Arthur BUTLER married first to Hester TININ (1 Feb 1890 – 1 Sep 1926, buried Pinhook Cem, Wayne Co., TN.) . He married second to Clarice DANIEL LAWSON, (7 Nov 1898 – 28 Aug 1942, buried Lawson Cem. Wayne Co., TN). He married third to Lillie LUCAS of Hardin Co., TN. His children were by Hester: Mary Louise BUTLER, stillborn, 22 Aug 1923, buried at Pinhook; by Clarice: Martin Hay BUTLER, b. 1941.

After the war, Henry worked up North for several years. After Clarice’s death, Henry moved to Martin, TN to live with his sister, Cordie and her husband, Charlie STRICKLIN. Cordie took care of Martin Hay BUTLER for three or four years.

Henry and son moved to Savannah to work for the Ice Company. He soon married Lillie. He died 19 May 1973 following a long illness and was buried at Pinhook Cemetry. Lillie died in a few years and Martin Hay BUTLER survives.
