McCall Cemetery

GPS Location: 35° 12¢ 25² N, 87° 43¢ 07² W

The McCall cemetery lies about two to three miles north of Collinwood Tennessee beside State Highway 13 N. It is a fairly small cemetery with space to grow. There are about eight unknown graves here marked with fieldstones.

To the left there are two mounds of natural fieldstones which appear to be graves. Farther left is teh grave of a child covered with three tiers of hewn stones. No markings. On the north side of the cemetery are five graves near a very large pine tree which are marked with natural fieldstones. No inscriptions.

The Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery is located on California Branch Road in Wayne County, Tennessee just west of the Lawrence County, TN line. There are numerous unknown graves here.

To reach the cemetery, travel west from Wayland Springs Road near West Point, Tennessee on Collinwood Road/California Branch Road for approximately 3.5 miles. Or, from Collinwood, Tennessee, travel Railroad Bed Rd. east for approximately 4.5 miles and turn left onto California Branch Rd. Go approximately 4.7 miles to the cemetery on the left beside the church.

According to Rhonda Savoy in a message dated 19 Feb 2002,

“In the back corner by the “hollow” are three graves marked with field stones, these are John Wesley Ricketts, Jesse Ricketts and unnamed infant Ricketts (born and died 1 April 1917), Children of Jeff D. Ricketts and Tinnie Gamble (Gambrell) Ricketts. These are the brothers of my Grandmother. She and her sister took my to the cemetery in the 80’s to show me where these graves were.”

brownjrBROWN, JAMES RUSSELL, was born in Wayne County, Tennessee on 10 June 1893, the son of Isaac T. and Mollie (BASTIN) BROWN. He moved to Lewis County, Tennessee soon after birth. He lived on Cane Creek in Lewis County, Flatrock Community until December 1915 when he moved to Topsy, Wayne County, Tennessee with his father, sister and two brothers.

He served in the US Army as a private in DEV BN, at Capt Gordon, GA. He was scheduled to go to France but had the influenza and his group went without him. When the war was over, he returned to Topsy where he resumed farming. He and his brothers, Grady and Raymond, farmed and operated a grocery store.

Russell married Maude RICKETTS of Hohenwald on 9 Dec 1920. They had five children: Ernest, Dora Etta, Rex, Alberta and Donna.

Russell was a kind, gentle man who loved farming and cared about the welfare of his family, friends and neighbors. He was an elder in the Church of Christ at Topsey and was instrumental in erecting a building for the church which was finished in 1948. He belonged to the American Legion Post at Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. He served as Justice of the Peace for the 6th district for several years.
