Walnut Grove Cemetery

The Walnut Grove cemetery lies northeast of Waynesboro in Wayne County, TN. To reach the cemetery from the courthouse square, travel east by way of highway #64 for 1.2 miles. Turn left onto highway #99 and travel approximately 2.5 miles and turn left at the Wayne County Memory Gardens. Travel 1.2 miles to Walnut Grove Rd. Turn right onto Walnut Grove Rd. at the Eastview Baptist Church. Travel approximately 3 miles and the cemetery is on the left.

This enumeration divides the cemetery into two sections. Section 1 includes the graves at the entrance drive across to the row of graves beyond the cemetery sign that are in alignment with the large oak tree and the two cedar trees. Section 2 will continue with the next row past the aforementioned trees and cover all known graves to the back of the cemetery.

As is common with most old cemeteries, there are numerous unknown graves here. Most are marked only with field stones. An extensive effort has been expended to try to extract any and all information that is legible.

The Shields Cemetery lies just south of Waynesboro, Tennessee. To reach the cemetery, travel south from Waynesboro on State Highway #13. Turn left (east) onto Green River Access Rd. beside the Green River Baptist Church. Travel 3 tenths of a mile and turn right at the cemetery sign. Go about 1 tenth mile to the cemetery. The cemetery is surrounded by a chain link fence and the grounds are well maintained. This survey was completed May 21, 2008. Updated 31 October 2011.

Mt. Hope Cemetery

Mt. Hope Cemetery is located on Weatherford Creek Road in Wayne County, Tennessee. To reach the cemetery from Collinwood, travel south on Tennessee 13 for approximately 4.1 miles. Turn right onto the Natchez Trace access road, then left onto the parkway. Go about 6 miles and turn right (west) onto Weatherford Creek Rd. Travel about 1.1 miles and the cemetery is on the right side of the road. It lies between Mt. Hope Church Rd. and the Mt. Hope Church of Christ just north of the Cypress Inn Fire Department.

This enumeration was begun near the northwest corner of the cemetery with Row 1 beginning about 25 yards south of the corner. There are quite a number of old graves in this cemetery dating back to an 1859-death date. Every effort has been made to list the rows in a simple manner for ease in finding graves, but as with many older cemeteries, the graves are sometimes misaligned making it difficult to do so.

Cedar Grove Cemetery is located off TN highway 227 in Wayne County. To reach the Cedar Grove Cemetery, turn east off highway 13 onto highway 227 and travel 1 mile. Turn left and travel 1.5 miles and the cemetery is on the left of the road in front of and beside the church.

Riley H. Melton. From Wayne County. Convicted of Petit Larceny by Circuit Court, Wayne County. Sentence: 3 years. Rec’d at State Penitentiary 14 Oct 1841. He is 19 years old, weighs 117 lbs., 5 feet 6 inches high. Born in Bedford County 12 miles from Shelbyville, three miles from Fishing Ford on Duck River. His father, John Melton now lives in Wayne County, 12 miles from Waynesboro on the Florence Road. He has fair hair, blue eyes, and fair skin, tolerable good countenance.
