Location: On both sides of the hollow, south of Hoyt Johnson’s house on the Indian Creek Road. This church and cemetery were in existence between 1820 and 1910. According to Luther Lay and others, this was a large cemetery. Providence Church was one of the “mother churches” of the Indian Creek Baptist Association, founded in the 1830’s. About 1910, the church moved from this location to Memorial Church. It is not known what happened to the tombstones and markers in the cemetery. Only a few field stones now remain. Like many abandoned cemeteries in Wayne County, the stones were probably removed by the land owner for the purpose of cultivation of the land. The land here has been under cultivation since about 1920.
From available information, the following kust of burials is provided. It is possible that some of these may be buried in other cemeteries, but this is the best reconstruction available at this time.

Considering the size of this cemetery, there are many more graves than names listed here. It is impossible to determine who the ohter gaves are without additional help from church records, etc.
David Dickerson is my wife’s 4th Great Grandfather. We drove to Wayne County recently and followed Indian Creek Road all the way. The only reference I have is a lady on Ancestry that said it was just south of Hoyt Johnson’s place. I don’t know where that is. Can anyone help with directions, gps, landmarks. (BTW, her family name is Johnson and one Great grandfather lived in Wayne County close to David in the 1830’s before settling in Tishomingo County, MS area. Could Hoyt be a descendent of the Johnsons from that time?)
I did some research a few months back on this cemetery, let me try to find it.
Mrs. Betty,
Any Luck on that research you were going to look for?
