To reach this cemetery, travel north from the square in Waynesboro for .6 mile and turn left. Go .1 mile to TN Highway 64 and turn left. Travel 1.2 miles and turn right at the flashing caution lights. This is the Old Clifton Turnpike. Travel about 8.6 miles. The cemetery is on the right on the hill.

A sign at the road going to this cemetery has the following information:

The Woodard/Dial Cemetery is located in the West Point Quadrangle. To reach the cemetery, turn east off the Natchez Trace Parkway onto Glen Rock Road aka Factory Creek Road. Turn off the parkway just south of the Lower Glenrock rest area. Travel 1 mile and turn right. Following Factory Creek Road, travel 2 miles and turn right onto a narrow road up a hill. Travel .2 miles and the cemetery is on the right beside the road. This cemetery has previously been known as the Dial Cemetery. However, the sign implies that it is the Woodard/Dial Cemetery. There are three graves here marked only with fieldstones.

J.W. Darnell Grave

LOCATION: Exact location not known. Buried somewhere in the block bounded by 2nd and 3rd Avenue and Tennessee St. and Park St.

According to testimony given by Mrs. Harmon (Hiram) Lakey in Chancery Court case #1086 entitled, “Lonnie Tilley, et. al. vs., The Tenn. Valley Iron and R.R. Company”. Mr. J.W. Darnell, “a Bushwacker” was found dead one morning at the Lakey gate on the old Waynesboro-Florence Road. Because they feared retribution from other bushwackers they buried Mr. Darnell on the south side of the road. His date of death was 1864-5.
