According to Bessie Davis Goodman, Thomas Hill and his wife Elizabeth Felkins Hill were buried in this cemetery. Mrs. Goodman is the Hill’s great granddaughter.

Riley, Rebecca Throgmorton c1842-c1881 was buried here. She was the wife of William Riley who was a veteran of teh Civil War, serving in the CSA They were the parents of Tennie Howell.

Thornton Graves

Somewhere between Oak Grove and Whitten’s Crossroads is a small cemetery which according to Mrs. Virgie Whitten Rich was located on the side of the old road. It is possible that these graves are those of

Thornton, Josiah 22 Aug 1758-c/1848, Rev. Soldier from South Carolina and his wife                                                                                                                                   Thornton, Sarah 1 Mar 1765-October 1849.

Josiah owned land in this area and died in Wayne County as did his wife. Her death is recorded on the 1850 Mortality Schedule, 1850 U. S. Census for Wayne County. Information by Edgar D. Byler, III and Nellie Berry.

William Riley Cemetery

Meredith Cemetery

Location: North Green River and near the Pitts Cemetery and also near the McWilliams home, with the Buffalo River not far distant. The Meredith family orginally owned the land on which this cemetery is located. Some 19 graves are identified with only field stones. The Salem Cemetery is the principal burying ground for the Meredith family.

John Woolbright Grave

Location: on the old Butler Creek (old Chisholm) Road, south of Railroad Church and northeast of Quigley’s Store.

A government marker marks the grave of John Woolbright, a Union soldier killed in a skirmish between Union and Confederate patrols in 1862-64. In 1936-7, a committee composed of Mrs. Dalton Davis White, P. R. Bromley, A. A. Green, and W. R. Olive, requested and received the Quartermaster Grave Marker which was erected by Herman Stults and Floyd Grimes.

In a brief ceremony led by Mrs. White, the marker was dedicated and the grave of john Woolbright was formally recognized. Information collected by Mrs. White indicates that John was a native of Giles County, TN.
