Baker, Solomon H., December 1811 – 26 June 1867

Solomon H. Baker came to Tennessee – Kentucky – evidently along. He and his stepmother were not compatible, so, at the age of 21, his father “set him free”. He had carried mail barefoot to earn the money to make the trip. He wandered into Hardin County where he married Isabell Allison. She was a member of a very proud family, and they thought of Solomon as a vagabound who was beneath them socially. The story goes that he set out to prove to the Allisons that he was worthy of his bride.

After working at his father-in-law’s tan yard, he saved enough money to buy a small farm in Wayne County near the cemetery site. He built a five room log dwelling from virgin logs. Homemade shutters covered the short windows; hardwood ceilings with beams and a double fireplace in the center of the house added to the crudeness of the old structure which is still standing. (It is occupied by Jim Baker, grandson of Solomon.) Few improvements have been made. Glass windows have replaced the darkening shutters.

During his lifetime, Solomon operated a tanyard, a brick kiln, and an iron ore smeltering mill. (the underground fire, which made national news, on Perry Davis’ farm, was at the site of the smeltering mill, and it was thought that gases from stored charcoal made from hickory logs set off the fire after some hundred years.)

When Solomon died at the age of 55, in 1867, he had managed to buy all the bottom land from the Nancy Landing – four miles from Clifton – to the Clifton Landing. He had seven children, and he had divided the land in seven farms before his death.
