sharing historical information and data. Unicoi County is
located in the upper eastern part of Tennessee which borders North Carolina.
The Unaka mountain range traverses the county which includes
the Appalachian trail. The primary river is the Nolichucky with its
head waters coming from the Toe and Cane Rivers in North Carolina.
On
March 23, 1875, Unicoi County was formed out of Washington and Carter
counties. The following year, Erwin was established as the county
seat. The adjacent map shows the former county boundaries with
the blue line marking the formation of Unicoi.
