Robert Ellis and Sarah?

All the following children were born in Virginia.

  1. Eleanor Ellis married Henry P. Noel.

  2. Jesse Ellis b. 14 March 1783 married Mary Lewis Maun.

  3. Sirnellin Ellis b. abt. 1785. Married (note #1) 14 Nov. 1810 Sumner Co. TN to Margaret "Peggy" Hudson b. 20 Sept. 1794, d. 1831. Peggy Hudson-Ellis married another Ellis soon after the death of Sirnellin. The identity of this man has remained unknown. Issue from this second marriage: Jane, Margaret and Edward Silvanus, b. 1837. Peggy was apparently soon widowed again as she is found in the 1840 census of Bates Co., MO with her three children.

  4. Isaac Ellis b. 1788, d. 1864 (note #3). Married (note #2) 19 Mar 1810 Sumner Co. TN 1st to Mary "Polly" Hudson b. 7 June 1792 VA, d. 1860 census. Married 2nd in 1860 to Olivia Pierce-Lester b. 26 June 1803. * Olivia married first to Thomas Lester (Mar. 22, 1793 - Aug. 30, 1835). Olivia returned with her family to Pittsylvania Co., VA. She again returned to Sumner where she married Isaac. Olivia died 26 October 1887 and is buried in the Skeen Cemetery, Simpson Co., KY. Olivia Pierece Lester, second wife of Samuel's brother, Isaac, had a daughter named Mary Lester by her first husband, who later married John Ellis, son of Samuel E. Ellis and Betsy Gaines. Samuel E. Ellis was a veteran of the War of 1812 and served under General Jackson for two years. Samuel also participated in the Battle of New Orleans.

  5. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ellis b. 1788. Married (note #4) 20 Jan 1808 to John B. Hudson b. 31 August 1780, d. after 1850 census.

  6. Samuel E. Ellis b. 17 Oct. 1791, d. 20 Sept 1879 Stoney Point Cemetery. Married 20 April 1815 in Allen Co. KY to Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaines b. 20 Aug. 1791, d. 22 July 1682 Buried Stoney Point, Allen Co., KY.

  7. Abram Ellis b. abt. 1795, d. 26 April 1835. Married in 1818, name illegible in family bible.

  8. Mead Ellis b. abt. 1798, married in 1820 to Alpha, d. 27 July 1858.

Isaac Ellis and Mary Hudson

Children of Isaac Ellis and Mary Hudson are:

  1. Catherine Ann Ellis b. abt. 1810, died by 1869 (note #5). Married 8 Jan 1847 to William Stewart, died after 1870.

  2. Ellen Ellis b. abt. 1812. Married 29 March 1837 to William Butler.

  3. Margaret Ellis b. abt. 1813 married 24 March 1833 to Edward P. Gaines.

  4. Sarah Ellis b. 1813-1815, d. after 1880 (census living with dau. America, Sumner).Married 1st to John Reid. Married 2nd on 20 Feb. 1869 to Ezeckiel Harper.

  5. Capt. Hudson C. Ellis (note #6) b. 1818, d. 17 Oct.1903 Hartsville, TN. Married 17 Feb. 1851 to Josephine E. Towson, b. 1834 TX, died 6 June 1812, Hartsville TN.

  6. John D. Ellis b. 1820 TN.

  7. Isaac Jr. Ellis b. 1825 TN, married Jane b. 1823.

The 1820 census of Sumner County, Isaac is located with his wife and five children, two males under 10; and three females under 10. Identity of these children is not known. Living a few houses away is a Sarah Ellis, age 45 - 55, with two males age 16-26 and one female age 16-26. Also living next door is a Dinah Ellis, relationship unknown, and John Hudson, wife; two males under ten; one male 10-16, three females under 10; and one female 10-16.

Sometime after 1850, Isaac and Mary relocated to Simpson Co., KY where his uncle Samuel had been living for sometime. Simpson Co., adjoins Allen Co., on the west and both adjoin Sumner Co., TN.; "An-Searching" News, 1963, page 161. The 1850 census of Sumner finds Isaac, age 26, wife Jane, age 28 and daughter Sarah E., age 1. District 3 notes John Hudson's occupation merchant.

William Edward Ellis and Amanda Stovall were married in Sumner County, Tennessee. The marriage was recorded in Hawkins Township, Church Hill Parish. Elizabeth, William Edward and Amanda are buried in the Royse City Cemetery, Rockwall County, Texas, just outside of Dallas.

The census of 1860 for Sumner notes an Isaac Ellis, age 70, District 19, Post Office Gallatin, 198-338, married within the year to Olivia. The household includes Eliza Ellis, age 21, John D. age 34, John Riddle, age 13 born in KY, and Sarah Butler, age 20, most probably his granddaughter.

  2. Edward R. Ellis b. Dec 1867.

  3. Elizabeth Deva Ellis, b. 6 Feb. 1871, d. 6 Oct. 1947 Chicksaw, Blair Co., TX. Married 7 Oct 1891 Nadine, Rockwell Co. TX to Dr. Wm. H. Clarkson b. 1861 SC.

  4. Josephine "Josie" Ellis b. July 1874.

  5. William H. Ellis b. April 1876, d. 1952 Sulfur Springs, TX. Married Ida Faye Oliver.

  6. Richard Marcus Ellis, b. 30 Oct. 1877, d. 17 Feb. 1961. Married 24 Nov. 1909, Waco, TX to Rugie Bell Cox.

  7. Lula "Lou" A. Ellis b. 18 Dec. 1882, d. 29 Sept. 1937. Married Clarence A. Vernon.

  8. Robert Hudson Ellis b. 7 Jan. 1887 Hebron, TX, d. 7 Oct. 1967. Married 4 April 1919, Fate, TX to Henrietta Bell Conway.

Amanda Stovall Ellis was born 17 May 1845, at Stovall Gap, near Portland, Tennessee. Sometime in 1883 she and her husband, William Edward Ellis, removed to Kaufman County, Texas. William's brothers, Alex D. and Frank Ellis also settled in Kaufman, where they owned a seed store. One daughter, Mary Mollie and her husband Henry Almos Meador, followed Amanda and William to Texas. Not caring for the area they soon returned to Tennessee where they lived out the remainder of their lives.

William Edward Ellis and Amanda Stovall were married in Sumner County, Tennessee. The marriage was recorded in Hawkins Township, Church Hill Parish. Elizabeth, William Edward and Amanda are buried in the Royse City Cemetery, Rockwall County, Texas, just outside of Dallas.

William Ellis died in 1913. Amanda remained in Rockwall with Edward R. and Josephine until her death in 1934 at the age of 90, Josephine then living with her sister Lou. Amanda and William are buried in the Royse City Cemetery, Rockwall County, Texas. Children also buried there are Edward R., Josephine, Richard Marcus and Robert Hudson. Mollie and Henry Almos are buried in Portland, Tennessee; Lizzie buried in Oklahoma; Lou buried at Rockwall, and William H. buried at Sulfur Springs, Texas.

Hudson C. Ellis was a Captain in the 9th Tennessee Cavalry under General John H. Morgan. He was captured on the Ohio raid and imprisoned at Columbus when his chief escaped from that prison. He was successful in business, owning a large farm by the Cumberland River, and was president of the Bank of Hartsville from its organization, in 1884, until his death, which occurred in Hartsville in October, 1908. Hudson owned the area today known as "Ellis Square", a few miles northeast of Nashville.

Captain married Josephine Towson, born in Brazos, Texas, daughter of Jacob Towson, a wealthy family from Baltimore, Maryland and a leading citizen in Hartsville. She was an ardent Confederate Daughter. Josephine interviewed with President Lincoln in behalf of Captain Ellis which is rumored to have inspired the movie starring Shirley Temple, "The Littlest Rebel."

* STATE OF KENTUCKY, NOVEMBER 1870, COUNTY OF SIMPSON: It is ordered that William Stewart be and he is hereby appointed guardian for Mary A. and Philedonia E. Stewart, they being over 14 years of age choose the said William Stewart as their guardian. Whereupon the said William Stuart executed his covenant to the commonwealth of Kentucky ...etc.,..

  9. The word "Almos" is said to be of Germanic origins, translating into "man of the woods".
