Robert Ellis, the grandson of Cadwalader Ellis, came to Sumner County Tennessee in the late 1790`s or early 1800`s. He and his family purchased land on the North Drake Creek near Fountain Head, where they were neighbors of and related to the Rev. James Gwin.

The emigrant ancestor, Cadwalader Ellis, was born ca 1662 near the town of Bala, Merionethshire Wales. He and his family were Quakers and one of the first to settle in Pennsylvania, arriving prior to 1687. His descendants moved to Virginia in the 1750`s, where Robert Ellis was born in Franklin County in 1758. Robert married Sarah Dehaven on May 14, 1780 in Loudoun County, VA. He died in Sumner County May 19, 1820 and may be buried in the Ellis cemetery outside Gallatin, TN. During the Rev. War, Robert served in the cavalry under Light Horse Henry Lee.

Children of Robert and Sarah Ellis:

1. Elanore Ellis b. Virginia. m. Henry P. Noel July 22, 1820 in Gallatin.

2. Jesse Ellis b. March 14, 1783 Culpepper Co., VA. m. Mary Lewis Maun. He served in the war of 1812.

3. Snelling Ellis b. ca 1785 in VA. m. Margaret "Peggy" Hudson, November 14, 1810 in Sumner County. He served in the war of 1812. Lived on 200 acres of land on the North Drakes Creek. He died in Sumner County ca 1829.

4. + Isaac Ellis b. 1788 in VA. m. Mary "Polly" Hudson in Gallatin on March 19, 1810. Lived on 200 acres of land on North Drakes Creek. He served in the war of 1812. Isaac died in 1864 in Sumner County.

5. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ellis b. ca 1788 in VA. m. John Hudson (son of Chamberlain Hudson) January 20, 1808 in Gallatin.

6. Samuel E. Ellis b. October 17, 1791 in Culpepper Co., VA. m. Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaines April 20, 1815 in Allen Co., KY. He died September 20, 1879 in Allen County.

7. Abram Ellis b. 1795 in VA. m. R.......? in 1818. Moved to Humphrey Co., TN and later to Simpson Co., KY.

8. Mead Ellis b. 1798 in TN ? m. Alpha........, in Sumner County. He died April 25, 1835 in Humphrey Co., TN

Ellen, Catherine, Margaret G. (Gwin?), * Hudson Chamberlain, John D. (DuVal?), Isaac, William Edward, Frank W., Eliza, Sarah, Currin and + Alexander DuVal Ellis b. ca 1826 in Sumner County. m. Margaret Alice Youree in Gallatin on July 30, 1856. He died in Kaufman County, Texas January 23, 1923 ?
