In the fall of 1862 he enlisted in the 28th Regiment, Tn Infantry, of the Confederated Army.
In January of 1863 he was wounded in battle at Murfreesboro. Two of his brothers Marshall
and Peter died in the Civil War.
Jackson Brooks married Martha Ann Phillips the daughter of Peyton and Cynthia Sloan Phillips
of Jackson Co. When Martha was a young child her father was sentenced to life in prison for
murder. He served 12 years of the sentence before being pardoned by Governor Andrew Johnson.
Jackson Co. records show they were divorced shortly after his release from prison. Martha never
spoke of her sad childhood. Jackson died in 1924 and Martha lived to the age of 93 years.
Their funerals were held in Mt. Tabor Church.
