History of Dyllis Community
(from the Dyllis School Web site, linked from the archived Roots of Roane Web site)
Dyllis community was named after Dyllis Headricks, daughter of Claude Headricks, former mayor of Harriman. The first school in the Dyllis community was called Mays School. It was established in 1871, and was a one-room log building. The first school was located east of the present school. In 1910, the Dyllis Railroad was built next to the school. Several homes were built for the railroad workers. In 1948, the three-room Dyllis School was dismantled and replaced with the present brick building. The gymnasium was added the following year. In 1974, the library and two classrooms were added. Recently six new classrooms were added to the existing structure.
