Tombstone Inscriptions in Historic Riverside Cemetery in Jackson Tennessee (Revised Edition)
by Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith
COPYRIGHT, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 1998SECTION NINE
(Page 86)
This section is situated between street eight and the concrete block wall at the extreme south end of the cemetery.
Whatever plat map for this section of the cemetery may once have existed it has long since disappeared. Miss Anna Butler, writing in the Riverside Cemetery Improvement Association's minutes noted that, "When the last map of Riverside was made the city engineer simply gave up when he reached parts of sections 8 &; 9. We have fitted in the numbers the best we could.... We waded through high grass and weeds when we made this list back in the days after World War 1. Mrs. Chas. King and I have done the best we could. I have copied our record, August 1965. "Rather than family plots as often as not burials in section nine, the "south slope, " were for individual burials. The numbers assigned by the association to these graves were designed to help identify names/graves by number for perpetual care.

LOT 425-A. JOYCE
Hannah wife of Patrick Joyce died October 7, 1868; this inscription is now virtually dissolved. Ingram James noted the presence of tombstones for her two daughters, Mary Ann and Sarah; they have disappeared although one foot-stone inscribed "M. A. J. and S. J." remains on the site. This is near the Confederate-dead lot on the south slope.More information in Scrapbook III.

James Ward Boyd, born Hopkinsville, Ky., September 14, 1822; killed Jackson, January 1, 1866 [Given name as from J. O. Hall, McLean, Va., from Boyd family records.]LOTs 427-A. through 429-B. CONFEDERATE BURIAL LOT
This lot consists of several rows of Confederate dead; the graves were marked with small numbered stones inscribed "C.S.A." many years ago. An 1898 snapshot of this lot indicates there were then four or five long rows of these stones. In 1937, Ingram James reported grave markers here "numbered one to one hundred and six." In the 1950s several of the original stones were replaced but not numbered. A monument in the center of this lot, erected by the local United Daughters of the Confederacy states that 75 burials are in this lot. Barring expert probing to determine just how many graves may be in this lot that number remains an open question. There is one damaged tombstone in the lot, in situ by 1898, ostensibly to /Sgt. Lee Briscoe/, age 21; Lieutenant /George/ Montgomery, age 42; both natives of Claiborne Co., Miss.; members of Colonel Wirt Adams' Confederate cavalry, killed September 1, 1862 at Britton Lane in southwestern Madison County.More information in Scrapbook.
