LOT 328. CONNALLY
In this vicinity in 1937 Ingram James listed a "John Ead." One John Eads died in Jackson, July 14, 1826 aged 21 years. Adjoining the nearby tombstone of Fanny L. Connally about a foot to the east is a large rounded brick vault; its inscription was evidently located on the east end of the vault and in time through natural or vandalistic means it was shattered and the vault was repaired. Ingram James noted the presence of this large tombstone but carried no inscription for it. It may be that this is the grave of John Eads and that part of the inscription was still laying nearby and reported by James as "John Ead." It might also mark the grave of Judge A. W. O. Totten whose lot adjoins the brick vault to the south. His daughter, Alice, left money to have her grave and that of her parents marked with tombstones. Only hers has an evident tombstone. The very close proximity of her tombstone and the little space left for her parents to her south make this a possibility. The Totten lot is a narrow one and the graves north of Alice Totten are marked. It may never be possible, at this late date, to discover whose grave the brick vault marks.

Fanny L. wife of Thomas D. Connally; daughter of John and Elizabeth Kerr, Halifax Co., Va., March 5, 1815-July 21, 1845; a raised slab tombstone [Addendum X includes a note that her tombstone was completely shattered in the May 2003 tornado]

In an article that appeared in the JACKSON SUN, June 1912, Thomas M. Gates (born December 1838) wrote of the local Mexican War veterans, "... and two were brought back /to Jackson/ in sealed metallic coffins and a beautiful burial service of the Episcopal Church was read in St. Luke's Church by the same good man, Rev. Louis Jansen...." The writer was only nine years old but remembers well the throng that entered and surrounded the church. Adjutant Wiley I. /P./ Hale and Lieut. Thomas Ewell were the two brought back to Jackson and after the services were over a large crowd followed the remains to the cemetery and after the coffins were lowered a salute was fired over their graves. Adjutant Wiley I. /P./ Hale's tomb can still be seen but the resting place of Lieut. Ewell cannot be found. "Thomas Ewell of the U.S. Mounted Rifles was mortally wounded in the battle of Cerro Gordo in Mexico and died April 18, 1847. Charles Richards of Jackson, in examining the Ewell family papers of Virginia found a transcript in long-hand of an article from the WEST TENNESSEE WHIG, Jackson, February 11, 1848 in which the services and burial of the two dead heroes were mentioned. The present writer found in the private legislative acts of Tennessee, February 15, 1854, where the Tennessee legislators passed a resolution of respect for Thomas Ewell for his courage and patriotism. There has been varied speculation as to the site of Lt. Ewell's grave in Riverside but the present writer was able to secure the volunteer help of Fred Johnsey, Jr., of Jackson, to survey the various lots in Riverside with a fine metal detector, particularly with the hope of locating Lieut. Ewell's LIKELY burial site. On the north border of Ewell's uncle, William Stoddert's lot, in line with and a few grave spaces north of Stoddert's own grave slab the meter reported a strong metallic presence. This was the location of a large oak tree that was blown down by the windstorm of April 11, 1995. At that time a metal rod similar to those used in grave fences was found to have been embedded in this tree. It cannot with absolute certainty be stated that this is the grave site of Lieut. Ewell but it is suggestive of that possibility and commonsense would "allow" that the young man's remains had been interred in the burial lot of relatives. Peace to his ashes!
