Woods School
Woods School – approximately 1897 – do you recognize anyone?
From the Democrat-Argus, Caruthersville, MO – March 28th, 1958:
“The photograph from which the above news cut was made is more than 50 years old, having been made about the year 1897 and showing the pupils and teacher (at far left) of the Woods school in Obion County, Tennessee. The photo is owned by W. A. Hart of this city who, with two or three of his brothers, attended the school—himself for his first year.
Shown in the picture also are Henry Cain Sr., of this city, two or more of his brothers, also his sister, Mrs. L. B. Grisham. Being small Mr. Hart had forgotten in this time the name of his teacher. Mr. Hart was about 8 years old when the photo was made, he said.”
Jake; this appears to be the Woods School which was operating during this period in Hornbeak – the person on the left I believe is Henry Clay Woods, Sr. (see Woods history p. 441, Obion County History). His daughter, Cordie, married Henry Cain, Jr. and the Grishams operated a store in Hornbeak during this time. Woods was my great-uncle. The Cains moved to Missouri sometime around 1930.
