UNION CITY.
A rapidly improving town of about 3,000 inhabitants, in the northwestern part of Obion County, 10 miles from Troy, the county seat, 33 north of Trenton and 156 west of Nashville. It is located at the crossing of the N. C. & St. L. Ry. and the M. & O. RR, and is comparatively a new place, dating its principal growth from 1866, although it was settled 12 years earlier. The lands upon which the town is located, and which surround it for a considerable distance, are extremely level, and the soil rich, deep, and highly productive. Cotton, corn, tobacco and wheat growing luxuriantly. Hard and soft wood timber is abundant, poplar, oak, hickory, walnut and maple covering a large area of the county, and often growing to an enormous size.
The place has 2 saw and 2 planing mills, 2 flouring mills, 1 woollen mill, 2 shingle mills, 2 brick yards, 2 plow factories, 14 stores, 2 druggists, 2 jewelers, 1 hardware store, 2 hotels, 2 newspapers, and various saloons, shops, etc. The Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Cumberland Presbyterian and Christian denominatoins have handsome churches. There are a select and several common schools. Express and telegraphic facilities are offered by the Western Union Telegraph and South Express Companies. Lumber, grain, flour, tobacco and cotton form extensive shipments. Mail daily from every point. Benjamin F. Scates, postmaster.
