PETITION FOR DIVORCE, in Obion County Circuit Court.
Wednesday, November 12th, 1828. – (E. G. Southerland vs. Janette M. Sutherland, petition for divorce)
The Defendant being called three successive days at this term to come into court and plead, answer or demur to the petition in this cause came not.
It is therefore ordered this publication be made four successive weeks in the West Tennesseean, a paper printed at Paris, that the Defendant come by the next term of this court and plead, answer or demur to the Petition or the same will be taken for confessed and set down for hearing ex parte at the next term of this court.
Court then adjourned until court in course.
Tuesday, May 12th, 1829. (E. G. Sutherland vs. Janette Mariah Sutherland, petition for divorce)
In this cause Hugh Allison was a witness summoned to appear and give evidence at this term as appears by the return of the Sheriff and give evidence in behalf of the Petitioner being called to come into court and give evidence as he was bound by subpoena to do came not but was in default; it is therefore considered by the court that E. G. Sutherland recover against the said Hugh Allison Twenty Five Dollars and by consent of the Plaintiff the Defendant is released of the above fine when the payment of costs.

Be it Remembered that this cause came on to be heard this 12th day of May, 1829 before the Honorable John C. Hamilton, Judge upon the petition taken pro confesso and the evidence; and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court that in the year 1820, the Petitioner and Defendant intermarried in the State of Louisiana and it also appearing to the court that the Defendant has been guilty of repeated Acts of Adultry since her intermarriage with the Plaintiff and during their residence in this State and County, and it also appearing that publication has been regularly made in the West Tennesseean, a newspaper printed at Paris, for the defendant to come in and plead answer or demur to the Petition which she has failed to do. It is therefore considered ordered adjudged and decreed by the court that the Bonds of Matrimony heretofore solemnized between the said Elijah G. Sutherland and his wife, the said Janette M. Sutherland be and the same are hereby totally dissolved, annulled and for nothing held and that they be restored to all the rights and privileges of unmarried persons and that the defendant pay the costs of this cause.
