  • McCARVER, Isaac N., Born in Tippah Co., MS; father/gfather from Hardeman Co., TN.   Enlisted in Jun or July of 1861 in 21st TN Inf, Co. C (CSA) (Hardeman County boys, mostly).  Stationed at Union City for training.  Stationed at Columbus, KY 1861.   Fought at Belmont, MO 1861.  Assigned to Union City, winter of 1861-1862.   Camp routed and destroyed by Federal Cavalry raid.  Unit moved to Corinth, MS.   Unit enlistments up in summer 1862; survivors absorbed in other units.   Isaac’s status is unknown; I have two affidavits – one says he deserted
  • in the summer of 1862; the other says his enlistment was up and he got out.  He joins a unit called Hatch’s (or Hatchie Scouts);  I do not know but believe this to be a Federal partisan cavalry unit.  In 1863, he and his brother Felix (also a later Obion Co. citizen) join the 1st Ala Cavalry (USA).  He is wounded in Nov, 1863 and discharged for wounds in Jan, 1864.   (Felix is also discharged at that time.)   On Jan 15, 1864, he joins the 1st TN Artillery (USA) and serves until Aug, 1865.   After discharge, he moves to Obion Co., and marries E. Berryman, who
  • dies by the end of the year.  In Jan, 1866, he marries Mary Simmons.  He is granted a Federal disability pension after the war, and, after his death, his window receives a Federal pension for service.   (submitted by Bill Hatcoat)r

Civil War Soldier Abstracts — 1 Comment

  1. The service records show Solon Poney Herring, like many starving Confederate prisoners at Rock Island, enlisted in the U.S.6th. Vol.Inf. He was shot and killed by a guard for unknown reasons the day after he enlisted. This outrage was all too common at Rock Island! He is buried in the camp cemetery with a Union soldier’s headstone. He was my g.g.g.grandmother Amanda Herring Simmons’ half-brother and the son of Abraham and 2nd. wife Mary Herring.- – – – – – – May He Rest In Peace.
