Bates Funeral Home
This clipping was located in the Union City Daily Messenger. It was either from July/August 1938 or March 1940. The funeral home was later converted into a Catholic school, and torn down in 1991. The Daily Messenger on July 3rd, 1991, reads:
At some time about 1939, Mr. and Mrs. John Bates opened Bates Funeral Home in the house, an unsuccessful venture of 18 months (one funeral). It was sold in 1941 to the Catholic Church and later that year, they announced plans to open a parochial school there in September of the following year.

This funeral home sat somewhere in the general area of the corner of Fifth and Main Streets. The Immaculate Conception Church (now on Reelfoot Avenue) was originally at the northwest corner of Fifth and Church Streets. Mr. and Mrs. Bates were John S. and Rita Bates, of Fifth Street, Union City.
The only known funeral held at Bates Funeral Home was that of Mary Morris Miles, who died on August 31st, 1940.
