Marine Flies Home to Bury 4 in Family
Sunbright, Tenn. (AP) – A Marine Corps veteran who recently had been fighting in Korea was flying home Tuesday to bury his wife and three children. M/Sgt. John B. Parker, a 25-year veteran of the corps, is scheduled to arrive here Thursday. The funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Sunbright Baptist Church.
Mrs. Ruby Summer Parker, 45, and two of her children, Judy, 10, and Thomas, 2 were found dead “from some kind of gas” when two of her brothers broke down the door of her home last Saturday. The other child, Bryan Parker, 11, and Miss Betty Edith Tinch, 20, who operateda beauty parlor on the first floor of the residence, died Sunday in a hospital.
The two smaller children were found in their beds, but the mother, the beautician, and the oldest boy were found on the floor. A telephone hook its hook Undicated they hatried to get help before becoming overcome by the deadly gas.
Services for Ms. Tinch will be held Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in nearby Allardt.

PEARSON, CARL ALLEN, 61, Rigby, Idaho, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the LDS Hospital. Carl, the son of Obed and Lora Hazel (Pittman) Pearson, was born in Rugby and graduated from Sunbright High School. He was of the Baptist faith. He married Patricia Ann Faulconer in Las Vegas, Nev., in July 1971. Carl was a veteran of the United States Navy. He later went on to graduate from Cal State Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree. He worked for the Long Beach Naval Shipyard as an electronics foreman and then for Seal Beach Naval Weapons as the electronics supervisor in their Calibration Lab. Just before moving to Rigby, Carl worked at Disneyland in their security department. He was an avid target shooter whoenjoyed the outdoors. He also loved hiking, mountain climbing, camping, fishing, astronomy and reading. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Keith Allen Pearson and Kevin Christopher Land; a sister, Margaret Reagan; and a brother, Billy Don Pearson. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Kerry Patrick (Heather) Pearson of Westminster, Calif., and Kelly Christian Land of Buena Park, Calif.; sisters, Alice Faye (Robert) Crabtree of Rome, Ga., Lora (Thomas) Arledge of Perry, Ga., and Mary Underwood of Sunbright; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. PEARSON, WILLIAM LARZ, Sr., 78, died Wed. Aug. 12, 1998 in his home in Wadsworth, Ohio after a long illness. He was born in Oakdale and graduated from Oakdale High in 1938. He entered the University of Tennessee, but his studies were cut short to volunteer for the Army for World War II. During the war he was involved in chemical and biological warfare, achieving the rank of master sergeant. He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering in 1946. During his long distinguished career in the rubber and latex industry, he worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron (1946-1953), General Tire and Rubber in Marion, Ind, (1954-1955) and for Inland Div. of Gen. Morots Corp in Dayton (1955-1958). He retired as director of technical sales of synthetic latex division of Firestore Tire and Rubber Co. in 1980. His life was marked by great love of family, intellectual achievement and courtesy, love of music and a deep religious faith. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wadsworth. He was preceded in death by parents Albert (Pat) and Xena Wilson Pearson; brothers, Jack and Charles and sister Rita Snow. He is survived by wife of 54 years, Margaret Ann (nee Kolton); son William Larz Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; son and daughter-in-law Stephen Patrick and Andrea of Wadsworth; and grandchildren Pat, Drew and Mandy. PEMBERTON, MYNTHA BELLE —Services For Mrs. Pemberton Held Monday—Funeral services for Mrs. Myntha Belle Pemberton of Sunbright Rt. 1, were held Monday afternoon. Mrs. Pemberton, wife of Archie Pemberton, a retired farmer, died Friday, September 11, at her home. She was 73. Since suffering a stroke in August 1962 Mrs. Pemberton had been bedfast and had spent over a year in the Harriman Hospital. Besides her husband she is survived by three sons, Ralph C. Pemberton, Rt. 1, Deer Lodge, Paul and Hugo Pemberton, both of Dayton, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Aileen Moore of Detroit, Mrs. Vinca Smith, who lived with her father and mother, Mrs. Virgie Hamby, Lancing, Rt. 2, and Mrs. Pauline Ashbrooke of Cincinnati; sixteen grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. D. S. Storey of Glenmary, and Mrs. James Cromwell of Sunbright. Mrs. Pemberton was born in Pickett County, Tennessee, March 31, 1891, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Stanford. Most of her life was spent in Scott and Morgan Counties. She was a member of the Methodist Church. The Rev. Roy Blevins officiated at the funeral service held at the Schubert Funeral Home Chapel. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also loved spending time with them. She was of the Baptist faith. PERRY, WILLIE MAE HEIDLE, age 98 of Wartburg, passed away on November 18, 2008. Willie Mae was the second of four children born to Gus and Iola Heidle. Willie Mae was married to Eston Lee Perry, Sr. (of Cumberland County) in 1935, until his death in 1960. Willie Mae was preceded in death by her brother, Roy Heidle and her sisters, Rosa Matilda (Tom) Heidle and Rema Dixie (Dick) Powell. Willie Mae was born in Wartburg and spent most of her life in the community and was an active member of the Liberty Baptist Church. She considered her friends at Liberty a second family. She was well known for her home-cooked meals and baked-from-scratch desserts. Willie Mae Perry was a graduate of Wartburg High School and attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. Willie Mae taught elementary school after college at the Flat Fork School, which was located at present location of Highway 62 and Mill Road in Morgan County. PETERS, ABSALOM BARTON, was born near Shanute, Tenn., in what is now Pickett County, on the 31st day of July 1871. He was the second child of Tobias and Mary Jane Peters. His grandparents were among the first settlers of Morgan County. His maternal grandparents were Rev. A. B. and Cyntha S. Wright. Rev. Wright gave his life in service in the Christian education and uplift of the mountain children of Picket, Fentress, Cumberland, and Morgan Counties. Prof. Peters was his namesake and when one knows the similarity of their ideals and sacrifices, they will see that the Spirit of the one rested upon the other. Tobias and his wife moved to Morgan County and settled at Burrville, Tenn., when Prof. Peters was about one year old, and it was here that he was reared to manhood and spent most of his mature life, he was educated in the public schools of his community later attending Maryville College. While the advantages of getting an education in his day were not so good as they are now, he was determined to have an education. He would teach for a few months in the early fall and after his school was out he would go to school wherever he could. He was never a graduate of an accredited high school or college, yet he was as educated man in the true sense of the term. He was a great student. Always studious. Always learning. He was one of the best read men of his time. He could discuss, with you most any subject, intelligently and showed that he was a man with a great mind. In 1898 when President McKinley called for volunteers to defend their country against Spain, he was one of the first in enlist. Capt. John W. Staples came to Burrville in May, 1898 and Prof. Peters with several other boys readily gave their names to help Staples make up his company. It was some time later, fearing that Staples would not he able to make up the required number for his company, he with five or six other boys learning that there was a recruiting officer for the First Tenn. Regiment at Nashville, went to Nashville and enlisted in the 1st Tennessee Regiment. They were immediately sent to San Francisco, Cal., where the regiment was held in training. His regiment was sent to the Philippine islands late in the year of 1898 where it remained until the summer of 1899. He enlisted as a Private but was promoted corporal. After about 21 months in the army he was honorably discharged at San Francisco, Nov. 23, 1899. He was a good soldier. One of his comrades said that he never heard him speak an unkind word and that his character was above question. He came back to his parents as pure as he was when God gave him to them. After he returned home in Dec. 1899, he attended school until spring at the A. B. Wright Institute, he taught in this school in the years 1900-1903. On July 31, 1903 he was married to Miss Jessie Smith of LaFollette, Tenn. There was born to this Union three children, two boys and one girl. One boy dying in infancy leaving only one boy 14 and a girl 9. Thinking that he could do better in his profession he moved to Louisiana in the fall of’ 1903. His school record in I Louisiana was a wonderful success. He was Parish Superintendent of Schools of St. Tammany Parish in 1910-1911 and resigned this position to become vice president of Whitworth College, Brookhaven, Mississippi. He resigned this position in the later part of 1912 to become president of Mansfield College, Mansfield, Louisiana. He held this position until his health necessitated his going to a higher climate, because of malaria in his system. He left Mansfield and came back to Burrville, Tennessee and accepted the position as principle of the Petros City Schools. He taught for two years in Petros where his work tells for itself. He left Petros to teach at Deer Lodge so that lie might be near his family who were living at Burrville. He ran for County Superintendent of schools in 1917 but was defeated by Prof. Ernest Williams of’ Wartburg. When the United States was drawn into the World War, and the young men were called to service. Prof. Williams enlisted leaving the office vacant. The County Court unanimously elected Prof. Peters to fill out the unexpired term. He was again elected in 1919, in 1921, and in 1923 he was elected for four years. At the time of his first election the country schools were running for only four months. This was due to his untiring efforts in the interest of the boys and girls of his home country. It can truly be said that he gave of his best in the carrying out of his program. giving the boys and girls in the out of way places a chance for an education. He was a Christian man. He early gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ. He believed that no man could be a true success without being a Christian. He thoroughly believed in Christian Education. He was a devoted and devoted and [not legible] at the time of his death he was District President of the Layman’s Association of the Holston Conference of the Methodist Church. He recognized Stewardship as a fundamental principle in giving and gave a tenth of his income to the lord and his work. No man it seemed had more friends that he. To know him and see his interest in his work was to love him. He had evidently been sick fur a long time before he broke down. On May 11, 1923, while at work in Wartburg, he suffered a break down in the form of acute rheumatism in the right leg. He seemed to get better of this, but his liver gave him trouble. On May 30th, we called in Dr. St. John of Harriman for a consultation with Dr. Jones. They advised us that he had Bright’s disease. In the hope that it might do him good and that he might recover his health in a small degree at least, we took him to Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. I however, the chances were against us and we lost out fight. On Sunday, July 15 the end came. The Spirit, which had been embodied in such a beautiful life, took its flight and is now basking in the sunlight and presence of The Father’s Love. He was conscious up to within two minutes of the end. He realized that he could not live and suggested to his wife the details of his funeral. He selected the preacher, the text, the songs and the pallbearers. The funeral services were held at Burrville July 18, in the presence of the largest crowd that ever attended a funeral service in Morgan County. Rev. I. H. Bee of’ Rose, Tenn., had charge of the services, after a very beautiful and impressive talk by Rev. Bee, the services were turned over to the Knights of Pythias which rendered in a very beautiful way, rites to one of their members. He was buried in the beautiful cemetery behind the Methodist Church at Burrville. He leaves a widow, one son, one daughter, two sisters, five brothers and a host of friends. Our loss is his gain Barton, we will miss you; but your consecrated and inspiring Christian life will ever be a benediction to us and will inspire us to give of our best in service to humanity. Peters, Absalom Barton (Prof. A. B.) — IN MEMORIUM — Where as, on the 16th day of July 1923, God in his infinite wisdom thought best to call from our midst our beloved leader, County Superintendent of Education, Absalom Barton Peters. As a result of his untimely death the schools of Morgan County have suffered an irreparable loss. There has never been a more zealous worker in behalf of the educational interest of this county as well as the state at large. Born in 1871, he was educated in the public schools of Morgan County and at Maryville College. At the early age of eighteen he began his career as an instructor and since that time has devoted his time, study and private means to the educational advancement of his county. Therefore, Be It Resolved: 1. That we, the members of the Morgan County teachers Association, to perpetuate his good work, more earnestly and zealously dedicate ourselves to the service of humanity in an effort to raise the moral, religious and literary standard of education in our county, thereby paying to our fallen leader a tribute, which we believe, were he alive, would afford him great pleasure. 2. That we pay our sincere tribute of respect to the memory of him who was not only our educational leader, but a leader in every movement for the betterment of our country morally and religiously and was a true friend to each of us personally. 3. That we extend to his bereaved family our sincere sympathy in the great loss they have sustained, but remind them that while their temporal loss is great, yet a happy reunion is certain in that great beyond. 4. Born and raised in Dalton, Ga. she lived in Sunbright for 30 years, recently moving to Hiram, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Lee Peters; daughter Brenda Ann Phipps; sister, Sybil Henzie; brothers, Edward, and J.W. McCurdy. Mrs. Peters is survived by her son, Bruce (Theresa) Peters of Hiram, Ga.; daughter, Linda Joyce (Danny) Supeck of Jamestown; brothers, Clifford and William Bruce McCurdy both of Dalton, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. PETERS, ELIJAH F. [FRANK], was born April 23, 1837 in Anderson County and died Sept. 25, 1926, age 89 years, 5 months and 2 days. Mr. Peters was the son of Wesley and Katy Peters; in early life he and his father’s family moved to this county and settled on a farm near the town site of Rugby at that time, 1861, the great rebellion between the states came up. Uncle Frank joined in with the Union army and offered his life for his country. After the close of the war, 1865, he came back to his home in Rugby; he was married to Kissah Range. To this union four children were born; three girls and one boy, which have preceded and gone on before. In early life, Uncle Frank, professed faith in Christ and was baptized and while not having so many outward signs as some do, yet a big heart always ready to sympathize with every need, always a good husband and a kind father. We feel we have lost a friend, but our loss is His gain, so farewell Uncle Frank, till we meet again. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Chas. B. PFAFF, MRS. MARILYN MAY – known as Lyn, died November 1, 2008 at her home in Spring City, Tennessee. The cause of death was cancer. Lyn was the wife of Rev. Robert Pfaff, Pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wartburg, Tennessee. Lyn was born January 24, 1945 in Butler, Pennsylvania to Richard and May (deceased) Pfister. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she lived until she attended Penn State University. Lyn graduated from Penn State in 1966 and began her teaching career. She retired from teaching in June, 2006 from Sunbright School where she taught high school mathematics for fourteen years. Lyn and her husband Bob were married June 5, 1966. They lived in Pennsylvania until her husband and she moved to St. Louis where Bob attended Concordia Seminary. For the past twenty years they lived in Wartburg, Tennessee. Lynn is survived by her husband of forty years. She is also survived by a son; Stephen of Rockwood, Tennessee and daughter and son-in-law; Peggy and Dennis Shutt of Wellesville, New York. Lyn has four grandsons and their respective families: Will; Michael and Danni and great grandson; Zayne; Matthew and Jenn and great granddaughter; Haley; Dan and Angie and great granddaughter; Skylar, all living in Wellsville, New York. PHILLIPS, CHARLES L., age 75 of Deer Lodge, went to be with his Lord Sunday, February 19, 2006 in the Life Care Center of Morgan County. PHILLIPS, FLORENCE McCOY — Florence Phillips Dies; Was 92 – Florence McCoy Phillips, a life-long resident of Morgan County, died Friday, Jan. 22, at the home of her daughters, Mrs. Ruby Jennings, in the Mossy Grove Community. She was 92. Mrs. Phillips was the widow of the late Jesse Phillips. She lived most of her life in and around Sunbright. Mr. Phillips died in 1942. Besides Mrs. Jennings the survivors include two other daughters, Mrs. Sarah McCann of the Meister Hills Community and Mrs. Cindy McCartt of Harriman; two sons, Reno Phillips and James McCoy; 32 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. PHILLIPS, JOSEPH LESTER, –Lester Phillips Dies After Long Illness.–Lester (Shorty) Phillips, a life long resident of the Fifth District of Morgan County, died at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday in a Knoxville Hospital after a long illness. He was 66. Mr. Phillips, a retired farmer and planing mill worker, lived in the Midway Community north of Sunbright. It was announced Wednesday afternoon that the funeral would be held Friday at 2:00 P.M. at the Midway Church where Mr. Phillips was a member. Burial will be in the Union Hill Cemetery. PHILLIPS, LESTER (SHORTY)–a life long resident of the Fifth District of Morgan County, died at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday in a Knoxville Hospital after a long illness. He was 66. Mr. Phillips, a retired farmer and planing mill worker, lived in the Midway Community north of Sunbright. It was announced Wednesday afternoon that the funeral would be held Friday at 2:00 P.M. at the Midway Church where Mr. Phillips was a member. Burial will be in the Union Hill Cemetery. The body is at Schubert Funeral Home. PHILLIPS, OLA, 89, of Wartburg, formerly of the New River community of Anderson County, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. Born June 15, 1914, in Stainesville, she was the daughter of the Rev. John B. Phillips and Ida B. Ward Phillips, both now deceased. Mrs. Phillips remained in the New River community until moving to Wartburg in 1998. She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Phillips, and by two daughters, June Bunch and Mildred Phillips. Mrs. Phillips is survived by two sons, Donnie Phillips and wife, Nellie, of Briceville and Lonnie Phillips and wife, Gladys, of Wartburg; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Goins of Briceville; and by several nieces, nephews and extended family members. She was born in Pleasant Ridge, TN on June 3, 1925. She graduated from Sunbright High School in 1942. She lived in Harriman, TN all of her adult life. She worked at Burlington Hosiery Mill for twenty years. She owned and operated Pierce’s Restaurant in downtown Harriman for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Everett Samuel and Edith Hammond Jones; stepmother, Celia Henry Jones; and brother, James Everett Jones. (called Patsy) Newberry. She married Benjamin Benard Jacob Henry on September 8, 1897 in Morgan County. John and Patricia were married November 12, 1874 in Overton County. Benjamin (called Ben) was the son of Peter Henry and Augusta Kries. Sarah had two sisters Mary Lee Pitts that married Issac Baker (called Boss) Newberry in December 16, 1894 in Overton County, and Delia Ann Pitts, that married John P. Cooper on April 18, 1894 in Overton. John P. Cooper was the son of Alex Cooper and Ann Molyneux. Issac was the son of Jacob and Jane Newberry and the grandson of Samuel Newberry. PORTWOOD, OWEN C., JR., 74, of Knoxville, formerly of Petros, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at his residence. Born April 3, 1930, in Petros, he was the son of Owen C. Portwood Sr. and Dorothy Gardner Portwood. A lifelong resident of East Tennessee, he was a member of Beech Fork Holiness Church and was an accomplished musician and a published songwriter. He was the founder of the Portwood Gospel Singing Group that toured several states in the Southeast. Mr. Portwood retired from the Oak Ridge K-25 site as a steam plant operator in 1991. He previously worked as a heavy equipment operator in construction. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War era. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris June Portwood. She was the daughter of the late Oscar Bishop and the late Barbara Taylor Bishop and was also preceded in death by her husband Homer Potter; and one brother, Ole H. Bishop. POTTER, REV. CLINTON EVERETT, 88 Wartburg, departed this life on Oct. 2, 2002 in the Methodist Medical Center. He was born on June 11, 1914 in Potters Chapel to the late Gilbert and Leona Potter. He was a resident of Joliet, Ill., for 25 years where he pastored Highland Freewill Baptist Church and worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co., until his retirement in 1971. After retiring he moved to Wartburg and continued his ministry. Clinton was one of the founders of Oak Grove Church and preached in many areas throughout the county. He and wife Marie were avid fisherment. In addition to his parents, Clinton was preceded in death by his wife Marie Potter; brothers Curtis, Dorsey, Noah, Earnest, Home and Charlie Potter; and sisters Berta Potter, Amanda Davis and Flora Cates. POTTER, HOMER A., JR., 70, of Anderson, (Indiana) died Dec. 21, 2001, at his residence after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 2, 1931, in Nemo, Tenn., and moved to Indiana in 1950. He retired from Delco Remy in 1987 after 36 years of employment and operated the Ideal Window Cleaning Service for 20 years. He graduated from Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Tenn. He served with the Marines during the Korean War. He was a member of UAW Local 662, past member of Solar Masonic Lodge 736. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was a member of the White Oak Baptist Church in Oakdale.Through faith and grace she battled Multiple Sclerosis over 40 years. She was a resident of Morgan County Life Care since 1986. While there she was an inspiration to others and loved by all. Before entering Life Care she sang with the Mathis family, enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting, canning and music. She opened her home to many with great love, where there was always food and laughter. PRESSLEY, THELMA C., 81, of Harriman, formerly of Morgan County, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at her home. Born July 2, 1924, in Roane County, she was a member of the Harriman Church of God and was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by parents, William and Martha Millsaps; her husband L.B. Pressley; sons, Gene Pressley, James Pressley and Willie Pressley; grandson, Shannon Kasior; sisters, Dorothy Bauer and Ethel Gerthung; brothers, Hermus Millsaps and James Millsaps. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jack Carter and Judy and Butch Stevens, all of Oakdale, Lucille Wigley of Aragon, Ga., Ruth and Robert Young of Rockwood, Diane and Don Voyles, Martha and Barry Mathis and Faye Miller, all of Harriman; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Kathy Pressley of Rockwood, Donnie and Wanda Pressley and Benny and Glenda Pressley, all of Oakdale; 37 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Keeney, Betty Westmoreland and Willie Mae Roberts, all of Harriman, and Ruby Clinton of Kingston; brother, Floyd Millsaps of St. Louis; and several nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral service was at 8 p.m. Friday, March 17, in Evans Mortuary chapel, Rockwood, with the Rev. Ottis Ball, the Rev. Mike McCartney and the Rev. L.B. Townlee officiating. PRESLEY, THOMAS PAUL – age 58, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2006 at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Presley was born August 24, 1947 in Petros, Tennessee. At the age of three, the family moved to Kentucky, where Tom went to school and graduated from high school. Following high school, Mr. Presley joined the United States Air Force and served his country during the Vietnam War. While in the Air Force he became a staff member of Air Force One serving during the Lyndon Johnson Presidency. Tom graduated from the Draughon Business College in Knoxville and worked as an accountant and bookkeeper. In addition he worked as a business manager, and salesman, establishing two businesses in Oliver Springs. The businesses were Industrial Wipes and Patco Mine Supply Company which he operated for several years. He was preceded in death by: his father, Paul Andy Presley, Jr.; and by an uncle, D.C. Brown of Petros. Survivors: son, Donald Paul Presley of Knoxville; mother, Jean Presley Bartley and husband Palmer of Knoxville; grandchildren, Starr and Suni Presley of Kingston; aunts, Sadie Harris and husband Jim of Petros, Ileen Culbertson and husband Arnold of Kingsport, Joyce Brown of Petros; devoted friend, Mona Bass of Oliver Springs. He is also survived by cousins and extended family members. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 28, 2006 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 pm at Kellytown Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 pm at the church with Rev. Mack Smith officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Anderson Memorial Gardens. PRIGMORE, BEULAH BESSIE “BOOTS” BURGESS, age 85, passed away at her home in Trussville Alabama on Monday, August 3, 2009. After several years of living with Parkinson’s disease. Boots is now free of pain and discomfort and is resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior in Heaven. Boots was born on June 5, 1924 in Coalfield, TN. , the daughter of Sib Elbert and Ethel Lane Burgess. She had fourteen brothers and sisters. In the first grade, she “picked out” Edwin Shelton Prigmore as the young man she wanted as her sweetheart. The two fell in love as teenagers and were married on March 2, 1943 and were happily married for sixty-six years. Their devotion to one another and their dedication to their family was an inspiration to all who knew the, Boots and Shelton raised five children in Loudon, TN and in Alabama where they moved in 1965. Boots was a homemaker for most of her life. After her youngest child was in junior high school, she worked several years as a receptionist for Dr. Robert Lumpkin, a dentist in Irondale, Ala. She was a volunteer for many years at the Trussville Nursing Home, taught 5-year old Sunday School at the First Baptist Church of Trussville for 25 years, and taught an adult Sunday School class while a member of the First Baptist Church of Loudon.She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Trussville and faithfully attended church until her health declined. She loved the Lord with all her heart, and she followed His teachings as a Christian wife and mother. Boots desired above all else that her family believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and to attend church. Boots was happiest when she was outside working in her flowerbeds, lovingly tending her flowers, shrubs, and trees as he created a beautiful yard that was enjoyed by her family and neighbors. She also enjoyed hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains, having picnics with her family, reading, and spending time with her many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She crocheted, quilted, and sewed many items that will be treasured by her loved ones. She delighted in assisting her husband in creating wooded children’s toys that they sold at juried art shows throughout the southeast for many years. Boots was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Ida Smith, Julia Ann Peters, Jewell Schrader, Hazel Gough, Marie Smith, and infant Josie; Her brothers, Jimmy, Vincent, and infants J.C. and J.D. Burgess, all of Tennessee; and her daughter-in-las, Joyce Steele Prigmore. Boots is survived by her loving husband, Edwin Shelton Prigmore of Trussville, Ala; Daughters, Linda Marie Prigmore (Larry) Layfield of Pinson, Ala, Cynthis “Cindy” Anne Prigmore (Chris) Marlowe of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Susan Elaine Prigmore (Jan) Kizziah of Tuscaloosa, Ala; and her sons, Edwin Sheldon (Brenda) PrigmoreIII of Chattanooga, TN and Phillip Brian (Sharon) Prigmore of Huber Heights, Ohio. Boots is also survived by her grandchildren Teddy Layfield, Dianna Layfield (Billy) Kennedy, Steven (Michelle) Layfield of Pinson, Jennifer Long (Chris) Cowan and Kathryn Long (Ryan) Pierce of Shreveport, Louisiana, Gina Perna (Brandon) Sevedge of Northport, Ala, Mark (Melissa) Prigmore of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Karen Prigmore buchanan of Tallapoosa, Georgia, Thomas (Rhonda) Prigmore and Michael Prigmore both of Dalton, Georgia, Julie Prigmore (Tim) O’Connor of Moody, Jason (Holle) Prigmore of Tallapoosa, Georgia, Nicholas Prigmore of Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Samuel “Cam” (Carla) Perna III of Birmingham, and Melinda Perna (Jeff) Braswell of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Boots is survived by beloved nieces and nephews too numerous to name individually. She loved all her family members and would want them to know how much she cherished them.
