“O” Obituaries

OAKLEY, JAMES, JR., died Nov. 21, 2002 at the VA Hospital in Nashville after a long battle with staph infection following a heart by-pass.  He was 77.  His family has been at his bedside throught out and was with him at his death.  James has been a resident of Waverly, Tenn., since 1971; however, he was raised in East Tennessee, town of Oakdale in Morgan County, graduating from Oakdale High School with the class of 1942 (in absentia WWII).  James was affectionately referred to as “Speedhound” by his Oakdale friends.  Just a year ago James lost his wife of 47 years, Johnny Wilson Oakley, to cancer  This void was never filled.  James is survived by his children Robert L. Oakley and wife Shelia, his son Jonathan and his wife and the great-grandson Jonathan’s mother Mary) of Hopkinsville, Ky., James A. Oakley and wife Lisa, their son Corey of Waverly, Vicki Oakley, her two sons, Josh and Jeremy Ethridge (father John Ethridge) of Waverly and Lori Oakley, her three children, Catye Summer Peach, Alexandrea and Mitchell Plant (father Tony Plant) of Waverly; one sister Barbara N. Hayes of Portsmouth, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews from the Oakley and Wilson families. Funeral services were conducted at the Luff Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly. OLMSTEAD, JACKIE R., 63, Huntsville, Al., formerly of Harriman, passed away Sunday evening, Dec. 16, 2001 in a Huntsville hospital. He was preceded in death by two sons Terry and Tommy Olmstead; and father Carl Olmstead. He is survived by two sons Tim of Harriman and Allen of Nashville; two granddaughters Jennifer and Ashley of Harriman; mother Mollie Garrett Olmstead of Sunbright; four sisters Marie Haynes of Sunbright, Iva Mayton of Harriman, Edith Olmstead of Huntsville, and Willa Dean Wright of Huntsville. OLMSTEAD, MOLLIE GARRETT, 105, Sunbright, went to be with the Lord April 15, 2005 in the Lifecare Center of Morgan County. She was born October 13, 1899. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Ben and Laura Garrett; husband, Carl Olmstead; five sons, Reed, Roy, Carl, Wayne, Hiram (Hi) and Jack Olmstead; three daughters, Marie Haynes, Loreen Robbins and Minnie Cochran. She is survived by three daughters, Iva Mayton of Harriman, Edith Olmstead and Willadeen Wright of Huntsville, Ala.; 26 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. She will forever be loved by family, friends and all who knew her. The family received friends Sunday evening, April 17, 2005 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Schubert Funeral Home in Sunbright. OOTEN, BETTY – age 54, Mossy Grove passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at UT Medical Center after a short battle with cancer. She is preceded in death by her parents, Delmer and Ida Turner Smith; brother, J. C. Turner. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Jo Houston Lee and very special grandson, Bradley of Mossy Grove; two sisters, Reva (Jean) Smith of Lancing and Treva Dishman and husband Richard of Jamestown; three brothers, Billy Glen (Bud) Smith and wife Wanda of Lancing, Howard Smith and Zetella of Kingston, Larry Smith and wife Arlene of Lancing; thirteen nieces and nephews; special friends and neighbors Robert and Eva June Weatherford. OOTEN, OLA – age 94 of Morgan Co., formerly of Roane Co., passed away Friday, July 12, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Doulasville, Ga. Ola was a former member of Sunbright Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Alvena Stone and husband, Fielden, of Douglasville, Ga.; son, Lee H. Ooten and wife, Sarah of Wagner, SC; 6 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren; sister, Frances Halpen of San Jose, Calif.; several nieces and nephews. OOTEN, MARGARET, 67, Jamestown, formerly of Morgan County, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2005 in the Fentress County Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Cox; parents, Doc and Ruby Jennings; son, William Tom Cox; and daughter, Ellen Marie Jennings. She is survived by her daughters, Rose Strey of Sunbright, Carolyn Sharp of Wartburg and Pauline Armes of Jamestown; sons, Roberts L. Cox of Oakdale and Billy Joe Cox of Jamestown; sisters, Cora McCann of Deer Lodge and Geneva McCann of Wartburg; brother, Bobby Gene of Wartburg; and 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. OOTEN, MRS. REBA IRENE, age 81, resident of Lancing, passed away Sunday, July 26th, 2009 at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born March 30, 1928 at Annadel. She moved to Indiana in the early 50’s and worked for RCA for 20 years, returning to Lancing in 1992. She was a member of Deer Lodge First Baptist Church.She was preceded in death by her parents: William Lindsey Howard and Jennie Cox Howard; daughter, Linda Gayle Baker; sisters: Judy Howard, Mae Hall, and Beatrice Hearn; and brothers: Kenneth Edgar and William Rurchford Howard. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Odell Ooten; children: Phyllis Coffman and Bill Baker; grandchildren: Brandy Dixon, Christopher Baker, Danny, Bryan, and Stephen Stanfield, Lelene DeVore and Joshua and Sarah Kersey; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sisters, Rosalie Gonder; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lincoln and Judy Howard, Herbert and Marcella Howard, and Clifford and Rose Mary Howard. To the very end she never forgot a birthday. She made it a point to send cards and call. She was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She had a strong faith and dedication to the Lord. ORAN, TULIS C.,  79, of Crossville, formerly of Oakdale, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006.  He was a well-known brick and rock mason in this area most of his life and a veteran of the Armed Forces. ORICK, ARVILLE, 65, Deer Lodge, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2005 in the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He worked as a mechanic for many years and loved to fish, sell and trade cars. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Edna (Norris) Orick; wife, Doris Eloise Orick; and mother and father-in-law, Jearles and Irene Ellis.He is survived by his children, Tim Orick and Georgetta of Helenwood, Terri Mays and Kenny of Oneida, Tammy Bowling and (David) of Oneida and Joshua Orick of Oneida; eight grandchildren, Jessica and Wesley Mays, Samantha Orick, Coty, Tyler and Caleb Orick and Tabitha and Keith Bowling; special friend and companion of nine years, Bertie Larue and her family; aunt, Wanda Bradley of West Virginia; uncle, Kinley Norris of Oneida; and many other relatives and friends to mourn his passing. OSBORNE, MRS. EVA BINGHAM – age 88, passed away February 7, 2007 at her home in the Mossy Grove Community. She was born February 17, 1917 at Camp Austin, near Oakdale. She was a devout Christian and a member of Mossy Grove Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she was a clerk and treasurer for 21 years, and a Sunday school teacher. She got her blessings by helping others. The high light of her life was a three week trip to the Holy Land in 1984. She also passed the test and got her GED when she was 84 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Osborne, they were married over 64 years. The grandmother who raised her, Amanda Bargetz, died when Eva was 14 years old. Rema Harvey, a devoted cousin, died in 2001. She is survived by two sons, two daughters, and their spouses: Frank Jr. and Betty of Elijay, GA, John and Ruth Osborn of Rockwood, TN; Cathy and Eugene Sabolcik of Grand Haven, MI and Carole and Dr. Darrell Tennelian of Dallas, TX; seven grandchildren: Frances and Jim Bragg of Canton, GA, Ellen McNail and family of Brennen, GA, Paul and Jodie Taylor of Clover, SC and Elizabeth and Dr. Scott Rollins of Knoxville, TN, Patricia Osborne of Knoxville, TN, Samantha and Richard Karpinski of Charlotte, NC and Eva Sabolcik of Grand Haven, MI; seven great, grandchildren: Jessica, Jennifer, and B.J. OVERSTREET, JEWELL L. CRABTREE,  82, of Roane County, died Wednesday Jan. 5, 2000 in her home.  She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and formerly of Trenton Street Baptist Church in Harriman.  She was preceded in death by her parents, John William and Rebecca Crabtree; and her husband, E. M. “Buddy” Overstreet, a long time Harriman grocer and businessman. According to her family, she was an avid pet lover and known for her big heart and solid work ethic.  She was last employed by Tommy and Jeff Goldston at Goldston’s Quick Check in South Harriman.  Survivors include her children, Jo [Joan]  Murdock and John Overstreet, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, Richard Overstreet, Susan Jobe, Tyler Overstreet and wife Laura, all of Roane County; three sisters; one brother and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and numerous close friends.  The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p. m. M. “Buddy” and Jewell Overstreet, he was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.   Survivors include two stepchildren, Melissa Hedgecoth of Crossville  and Joy Aiken of Dayton, Ohio; four siblings and their spouses, Joan and Don Murdock and John and Louise Overstreet, all of Cincinnati.  Susan and William Jobe of Jefferson City, and Tyler and Laura Overstreet of Roane County; and two loving aunts, Johnie Hixson and Cornelia Cade, both of the Ten Mile community. He also leaves many special friends at Lakewood Village of Kingston, where he resided for the past 14 years.  A graveside service will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, October 7, at the Edgemon Cemetery in Meigs County with Brother Paul Lloyd officiating.

OVERTON, MR. CLARENCE, age 80 of Petros, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2004 in the Lifecare Center of Morgan County. He was the son the the late Joe and Minnie Bunch Overton. OWNBY, RAY H., 72, Wartburg, formerly of Sevier County, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 in Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center. He had given his life to the Lord and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wartburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and five sisters. OWENS, IRA CLINTON, age 78, formerly of Deer Lodge, passed away May 30, 2004, in Columbus, Ga.. He was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Shadeland, Tn. to the late James (Jim) and Ina Gibson Owens and Curtis Owens, sisters, Odessa Owens and Virgie Qualls. He was a U. S. Navy Veteran of World War ll, and a 32nd degree Mason. He retired from Ford Motor Co., in Michigan. Surviving; special companion; Jesslyn Roberts, of Columbus, Ga. OWENS, REV. JAMES LIBURN, born June 13, 1882, died Wednesday, Dec 17,1969, at Oak Ridge Hospital.Mr. Owens’ early child hood home was in Rosehill. Va.The family moved to Rockwood Landing in a covered wagon. The three boys, Lil, Ola, and Stewart, went to work at an early age to support their widowed mother and a sister, Molly, all precedding him in death. Lil worked the riverboats for a while and then went to work in the coal mines. Lil was the first ordained deacon in Middle Creek Baptist Church and later gave up his deaconship to become an ordained minister by Middle Creek Baptist Church.He pastored churches for 55 years in Morgan, Roane and Anderson Co. He preached in Kentucky, Virginia, and Illinois. The last church he pastored was MiddleCreek, He was united in marriage to Merl McGlothin in a double ceremony with her brother, Harvey McGlothin and Maud Hines on Sept, 9,1906, This was the first marriage ceremony in the second building of the Middle Creek Church. To this union was born six children.Eleanor, who preceded him in death. Charles Owens , Chevrolet Ky, Opal Smith, Dayon, Ohio, Paul Owens, Nancy East and Dixie Cole of Oliver Springs, Mr and Mrs Owen were the grandparents of five granddaughters. Jimmie Lou Singleton, Katherine Hill, Virginia Welch, Donna Rice and Nita Sue Smith of Dayton, Ohio. Mrs. Owens preceded him in death, December 1959. He was the great grandfather of four greatgrandsons  and one greatgranddaughter. Funeral services were held at 2pm Friday Dec. 19,1969 at Middle creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Lloyd Napier and Rev Homer C. Hooks officiating Pall bearers were W.L. , Jackie, and Billy Jackson, Otto and Glen McGlothin and Fred Hamby.
