Mrs. Malonia Cofer celebrated her 100th birthday on New Years Day at the Laurel Brook Nursing Home in Dayton, Tenn. Mrs. Cofer, daughter of Civil War Veteran and farmer,  SAM BRADSHAW and Elizabeth Fairchild was born in Morgan County on January 1, 1871. In 1912 she was married to Jack Cofer. She has been in the Laurel Brook Nursing Home since August, 1968.  A birthday celebration was held at the home with cake and ice cream and several relatives and the staff at the home sang the traditional Happy Birthday to Mrs. Cofer. To add to the occasion, Mrs. Cofer received a congratulations card from President Nixon.

Mrs. Judith Rogers, a niece and Mr. & Mrs. Bob Taylor and daughter, Judy Ann visited with Mrs. Cofer on New Year’s Day. Mr. Taylor is a nephew.

On Sunday, January 10,, Mr. Herbert Bradshaw, a nephew, and Mrs. Henrietta Cox, a niece, also visited with Mrs. Cofer. The family wishes to thank everyone who remembered their aunt on her 100th birthday.

Melonia Cofer passed away in 1972 is resting in Jackson-Lyles Cemetery in Coalfield, TN.  She married William Jackson Cofer on Feb 1912, son of Abraham Cofer and Frances Malvinia Willis.(Find a Grave and other sources)

TN.d.5/13/1958 Montgomery Co., OH.  Jake was the husband of Julia Florence Langley and the son of Peter L. and Louisa Ann LAYMANCE Cross Mathis.

Ena.. b. 6/12/1906, Morgan Co., TN, 10/31/1988 Montgomery Co., OH.  Ena was the wife of Dallas Walker.

John Charleton. b. 4/6/1916, Morgan Co., TN.  d. 1/25/1997 Mossy Grove, Morgan Co, TN   John was the husband of Freda Overholt.

Benjamin Williams and Rebecca J. Smith


Benjamin and Rebecca were married in 1897.
Benjamin was born August 1873 in Tennessee, the son of David Sertain
Williams and Elizabeth Francis Perry. Benjamin died in 1912 in Morgan,Co.Tn.
Benjamin is the grandson of Jacob and Sarah Williams, and the grandson of
Sanford and Anna Perry.

Rebecca was born June 10,1881 in Tennessee, the daughter of Charles Smith.
Her mother may have been either Rebecca Quarles or Martha Qualls as family
was told, it’s still unclear who her mother was. Rebecca died July 7,1915
in Morgan,Co.Tn.

Benjamin and Rebecca are the parents of the following children…
Anna Melinda, Guy C., Luther Charlie, Henry Clyde, Samuel Monroe, and Gayson.

They are my great-grandparents through their son Henry Clyde Williams.

John B. Webster, Justice of the Peace

1867 – 1960

Squire Webster was born on Sept. 24, 1867 in the first civil district of Morgan County. (Coalfield) He married Cordia Christmas (1869-1912) on Jan. 4, 1891 she being a native of Grainger County.  There were seven children born to this union.  Squire Webster was the oldest Justice of the Peace in the county and State of Tennessee at the time of the writing of this article, June 23, 1960.  

He served 42 years as a member of the Morgan County Quarterly Court; married over 500 hundred couples; was a road commissioner in the first district in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s; worked for a short time as a guard at Brush Mountain Prison and was general foreman for W.P.A. during the 1930’s.  

Squire Webster died October 29, 1960 and was buried in the Davis Cemetery in Coalfield, Tn.

Martha Lena is the 1st child born to Roy Levi Brown and Delphia Emmaline Hurtt
and the granddaughter of  Elizabeth Ann Brown and an unknown Lyles and the granddaughter of William Erastess Hurtt and Mary Ann Polly Freels.
