HOUSE, 5th and 6th General Assemblies, 1803-07; representing Montgomery County in 5th, Montgomery and Stewart in 6th. Born in 1760; exact date and place of birth and names of parents not determined. “Educated in North Carolina”. Took oath of office for deputy surveyor in North Carolina, Jan 3, 1786. Married, date and place not found, to Elizabeth Bell, daughter of George and Nancy (Lowthing) Bell; children – William G., Horatio, John H., Nancy Lowthing, Hugh B., George B., and Adeline; order of their births not indicated. Came in 1800 to that part of Montgomery County later included in Stewart County; surveyed much land in region; acquired large landholding in Montgomery and Stewart counties. Resigned as Capt. of militia to become justice of the peace, 1791, and commissioned as justice of the peace, in Montgomery County, TN, 1796; clerk of county court, Stewart County, 1804-06. In Revolutionary War; enlisted as Pvt. in Nelson’s Co, 4th North Carolina Regt, May 2, 1776; made quartermaster Sgt. Jan 1, 1777; discharged May, 1779; given warrant for 357 acres of land for thirty months military service. Died at Clarksville, Montgomery County, Nov 5, 1808; buried in Riverview (Old City) Cemetery. Father-in-law of John Hamil Poston, sometime member TN General Assembly.
