Born in Montgomery County Jan 29, 1831; names of parents not determined. Attended “common schools”, showing “much aptitude and application to studies”. Married first in 1855, to Ally N. Trice, daughter of John and Harriet Trice; she died June 14, 1866; children – Emily, Henry J., Ida E., Margaret E., Lulie, James, and Serepta, second marriage, Sept 30, 1872 to Eliza Trice Alsup; children – Berry H., Beulah A.  Taught school, 1849; clerked at Yellow Creek Furnace; moved to New Providence, Montgomery, to enter livery and tobacco business. Elected justice of the peace 1860; sheriff 1865; appointed postmaster at New Providence 1870, served seven years. Master Mason 1867; Royal Arch Mason 1868; Knights Templar, 1869. Died in Montgomery County June 15, 1901; buried at home place of daughter, Mrs. L. A. Giles, Howell, KY.
