One of the most common questions that I am asked is "Where are the records for Loudon County prior to 1870?" Since Loudon County was not created until 1870, the lands that make up present-day Loudon County were once a part of Roane, Monroe, and Blount. If you know approximately where your ancestor lived, then on the map below you should be able to determine which county he was a resident of prior to 1870. This map is based on the Map Guide to the U. S. Federal Census, 1790-1920 by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide. It appears that the county lines followed the river.
