At the age of twenty-eight years he began teaching school, and the expiration of three years began farming, which he has continued up to the present time. In 1876 he purchased the farm of fifty acres, on which he now lives, and in 1882 was chosen magistrate of his district, and has faithfully discharged the duties of that office up to the present time. He is a Democrat, and he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. In 1881 he wedded Mary T. Kelley, a daughter of John and Susan Kelley. She was born in Tennessee in 1845, and is the mother of one child, named Lillie S., who was born in 1883.
