Goodspeed’s Biography of William Giles Lumpkins

William G. Lumpkins, farmer, is the fourth of eight children, and was born in Lawrence County, Tenn., March 1, 1844. (See James M. Lumpkins’ for parents’ sketch). He received the education and rearing of the average farm boy, and at the breaking of the late war enlisted in the Confederate service, in the Ninth Tennessee Cavalry, and served two years, taking an active part in the battles of Franklin and Nashville. March 30, 1865, was the date of his marriage with Caladonia Springer. To them were born the following children: William J., Gustavus H., Andrew J., Barney P., John B., Lucius T., and Jane Gertrude. Mrs. Lumpkins was born in Lawrence County October 19, 1846. He father was born in South Carolina, and came to Tennessee when a young man, where he married are reared his family. Mrs. Lumpkins can trace her ancestry back eight centuries. Our subject is a liberal Democrat and is a wealthy farmer, owning, at the present time over 700 acres of land, 500 acres being in the home place. His chief attention is given to fine stock raising and the production of the cereals.
