SLIDELL, John – (d. 1871)

The telegraph this morning tells of the death of the Hon. John SLIDELL.  The announcement is too brief, indeed is noticeably meager, when we recall the career of the deceased, who for many years filled the eyes of the people of the United States, and shared largely in the confidence of the Democratic party.

We are told that he died yesterday, where, how or of what disease we are not informed.  He has gone, and son after his comrade (Mason) of the Trent, who was more fortunate, in that he died in his native land, surrounded by his friends and relatives.  Mr. SLIDELL’s career was in a remarkable degree a successful one.  At the bar, in the senate, and in the diplomate field he was alike noted for industry and perseverance.  For the latter field, though never successful, he had peculiar gifts, by which, under as favoring circumstances as usually attend our Minsters abroad, he would have made high character as a diplomat. — Memphis Appeal.
