McGAVOCK, John – (d. 1877)

Death of a Pioneer Tennessean

Nashville, July 8 – John McGAVOCK died at the residence of his son-in-law, Rev. Dr. John B. McFERRIN, at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, in his eighty-sixth year.  Mr. McGAVOCK was the last of his family.  His father removed, from Virginia to Tennessee, and settled at Nashville in 1796.  The deceased was a soldier in 1812, and was one of General JACKSON’s bodyguards in the Indian wars.  He wore three scars received in fights with Indians and carried to the day of his death several bullets received in these stiring days.
