Bought Necklace and Then Gave It Back (1916)

Asheville, NC – May 21 – Word reached here tonight that Miss Eva BROWN of Nashville, Tenn., a delegate to the sessions of the Woman’s Missionary union of the Southern <…>, died last night in Chattanooga, Tenn., while en route home. On Friday when some $99,000 of the $180,000 foreign mission board debt was contributed, a woman missionary home on a furlough gave a necklace in lieu of money. Miss BROWN bought the necklace for $75, and gave it back to the missionary. The remainder of the foreign board debt has been appropriated among the various state delegations.
