Baseball (1876)

A match game was played Friday evening last between the “First Nine” and the “Plug Uglies,” all of this city. The First Nine are: Jo. HARDWICK, Ed. TIPTON, John LEGG, Tom HAYES, John JOHNSTON, Tom MONTGOMERY, Jo. CASH, John HARDWICK, and John COWAN. The “Plug Uglies” are: John RAMSEY, Swartz BURGESS, John ROGERS, Charles NEWELL, Theo. ROGERS, Alex. MAPLES, Will CATE, Jeff. MONTGOMERY and Polk COOPER.

They played to the seventh inning when the “Plug Uglies” were 15 ahead of the First Nine. They commenced on the eighth inning, but darkness came and they had to quit, leaving the “Plug Uglies” only 2 ahead – the First Nine being entitled to the last inning. Had the game been played out there would have been no telling who would have gained the victory.

The Athletics of this city and the Excelsiors of Chattanooga, will play a match game on Saturday, Oct. 7th, in this place. Seats will be arranged for ladies – all are invited.

Five of the Plug Uglies of this place have challenged the first nine of the Athletics, and will play the game to-day (Friday) commencing at 2 o’clock p.m.
