Awful Storm (1851)

…a most awful storm of rain and wind, accompanied by thunder and lightening, which demolished about one-half of the Town. By this sad visitation, three persons  were killed instantly by the falling of chimnies: viz; Mrs. Rowzee, a estimable lady and her child aged about one year, and the eldest son of Alfred H. Berry, a promising boy of some eight years….The Presbyterian and Cumberland Churches, the Masonic Hall and the large residence of Jas. L. Thomson are a mass of ruins…The following persons have been appointed a Relief Committee, to any one of whom remittances may be made: Col. Jas. Fulton, R.A. McDonald, Dr. S. M. McElroy, Gen. T.A. Owen, N.F. Neil, Jas. G. Woods, C.A. French, B.W.D Carty and Col. A. T. Nicks.

Since the foregoing was issued, we have gathered the following details.  MRS. ABLES, one of the wounded, died on Friday morning.

Buildings destroyed:  Jas I. Neeld’s dwelling, Buchanan’s heirs property, Mrs. J.V. McKinney’s dwelling, S.J. Isaac’s dwelling, W.H. Moores’ dwelling, Garvan’s dwelling, B.L. Russel’s dwelling, W.P. Neeld’s dwelling, R.R. McKinney’s dwelling and office; Dr. C. McKinney’s dwelling, Mrs. Greer’s dwelling, J.M. Bright’s office, A.H. Berry’s dwelling, J.W. Formwalt’s dwelling, A. Washburn’s dwelling, L. Womack’s dwelling, Betsey Holaway’s dwelling, J.L. Thomson’s dwelling, Scotts cabinet shop, C. Homan’s dwelling, Dr. McNelley’s shop, the Carmack office, Boyd’s dwelling, R.H. C. Bagleys dwelling, Mrs. Shull’s dwelling, Griffis dwelling.

Greatly damaged:  Wm. Neeld’s dwelling, J.M. Bright’s dwelling, M.H. Bonner’s dwelling, Beanland’s dwelling, Gordon’s dwelling, Gant’s dwelling, Roseborough’s storehouse, J. Goodrich’s, Webb & Smith’s, Nick’s, McElroy’s, Gant’s coffeehouse, Bonner’s shop, T.C. Goodrich’s dwelling, Owen’s tavern.

Partial Damages: R.White’s dwelling, A.R. David dwelling, C.A. French dwelling, Carty dwelling, W.Bonner dwelling, N.F. Neil dwelling, L.D. Akin dwelling, F.A. Dickinson dwelling, G.B. McKinzie dwelling, Fulton’s office, Hines tavern and new house, W.F. Smith’s dwelling, the Sneed swelling, McPhail dwelling, Gray’s dwelling, Dr. McNelly’s dwelling, Observer Printing Office, Shapard’s dwelling, Ross’ office, W.W. Formwalt’s dwelling.
