Do I have ancestors in Hickman. Boy do I!

I have included an outline of my bunch from Hickman, or at least one bunch. Just scan down to the bottom. They were in Hickman County by 1809. My Thomas line was in Hickman by about 1815, also.

My reason for volunteering is the same as for volunteering for the Ripley Co GenWeb site. By giving I receive. I have learned more about my family in Ripley Co by being a volunteer than I ever would have any other way. So I’m not pious. I’m just wanting to learn about my family and by helping others it helps me. With Hickman being a burned county, many of my brick walls lie there. I have been a member of the Hickman Co site since about 1996 or 97 I believe it was.

I wanted to let you know that on most weekends I am not online. But M-F I can dedicate most of my time to my genealogy if need be. I am a 59 yo retired paramedic. I live in Willow Springs MO (Howell Co). My other half and I own a computer store here. I raise Great Pyrenees dogs and sell them nationwide and into Canada. They are a livestock protection dog. I have 3 grandchildren, one of which I am raising, and two great-grand babies.

Edwin Hickman

Would anyone in Hickman County like to know what happened to the son of the gentleman for whom the county was named? The son was Edwin Hickman. He was the Mayor of Memphis when my great-great grandfather, Dr. Mark Brown Sappington, died in 1852. Edwin being a very good friend (and cousin) accompanied the widow of the doctor and seven daughters to San Antonio that same year. The doctor’s brother and wife were in residence there. It seems there were two Sappington brothers who married two sisters. Edwin never returned to Tennessee. He is buried in my family’s plot at San Antonio.

From Hickman Pioneer, March 22, 1878: “The 16th of this month all the perishable property belonging to the estate of Jesse Briggs, deceased, was disposed of at outcry. Almost everything went at an enormous price. Bacon, clear sides, 12-3/4 cents per pound — twice the worth in the Nashville Market. A wash kettle sold for five dollars and some cents. Corn sold for three dollars per barrel.”

“At the William Simmons place Samuel Golden settled in 1825 and lived here for several years. In 1838 Jesse Briggs bought this place. In 1830 William Briggs built a mill at the place now owned by the A.W. Anderson heirs. William Briggs was the father of Jesse, James (Pap), William and John Briggs. The late John Briggs, who died recently in the 2nd disrict and his brother Wiliam were for years prosperous citizens of the 7th district. Briggs chapel was named either for them or their father, who was a Methodist preacher. In 1840 William Briggs Sr. sold his land to Joseph Campbell who bought them for Alex. (Biscuit) Baker and Thomas Stuart. Stuart and Baker improved the Briggs sawmill and gristmill and added a carding factory, thus giving to the people of this section a convenience which they had not had hitherto possessed.
