LOCAL HAPPENINGS AT REIN; FEBRUARY 2, 1903 —
Mrs. Mittie JACOCKS is improving some after a severe attack of pneumonia.
Hon. H. C. STURDIVANT spent Sunday with home folks and returned to Nashville Monday accompanied by his charming daughter, Miss Judith.
Mr. & Mrs. CLARKE spent Sunday with her mother, Mrs. S. B. McCLISH.
Mr. L. P. WEBB left our town last Tuesday. We understand Mr. WEBB will explore the jungles of Arkansas.
DANCEYVILLE NEWS AND NOTES —
We may only mention the death of Mr. Alex MILLER, presuming that an abler pen will, elsewhere in this paper, recite the circumstances at length.
Eddie DAVIS, a prosperous merchant of Lake Village, Ark., is here to see his mother, who has been quite ill for sometime.
FROM LEBANON; JANUARY 30, 1903 — Prof. Howell LIVINGSTON, of Garland, Texas, was called home last Friday, on account of the death of his mother.
LOCAL HAPPENINGS AT GATES; FEBRUARY 3. 1903 —
Mr. Joe ESCUE is all smiles again, it is his fifth boy, and no girls to make their home bright.
Mr. Joe STANDLEY, and son, of Dry Hill, came through from Johnson’s Grove, where he spent a few days with his sister, Mrs. COBB.
LAUDERDALE COUNTY NEWS; RIPLEY NEWS —
Henry MATTHEWS, aged 60 years, died at the county poor house Friday night from the effects of morphine, taken with suicidal intent. He had been an inmate of the institution about eighteen months.
Mr. E. F. BRODIE leaves next Tuesday for Cisco, Texas, where he goes for a permanent location.
CROCKETT COUNTY CLIPPINGS — Tom BALLAD was fined $50. 00 and costs and sentenced to six months in jail, at the last term of court for selling whiskey.
LOCAL NEWS —
Walter MOSELY, (colored), charged with incest, was found guilty at this term of court and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary.
It is with deep feelings of regret that we announce the very serious illness of Mrs. C. P. EADER, who was yesterday evening reported lying at death’s door.
MARCELLUS STEWART, son of our fellow countryman, D. A. STEWART, died one day this week at Honey Grove, Texas. He was a young man of about 21 years of age and of excellant character. We are sorry that our information concerning his death is so limited that we are unable to give further notice of his taking off.
WILLIE LEE JEFFRIES, son of W. P. JEFFRIES, aged 26 years, died at the residence of his uncle, T. E. ROOKS, at Allen’s Station, at 4 o’clock Wednesday Evening, February 4, 1903. His remains were consigned to the grave at Zion Church burying ground yesterday evening, services by Richard G. HERRING, Esq. The deceased was a member of Zion Baptist Church.
GIN PLANT DESTROYED; RIPLEY, TENN., JANUARY 31, 1903 — The large gin plant of V. E. LOWERY at Fulton, 25 miles west of this place was destroyed by fire this morning.
SOCIAL AND PERSONAL —
Smiling skies and radiant sunshine ushured in the wedding day of those popular young people, Dr. John Conyers NORVELL and Miss Nina HUDSON, of Hanley. She was a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H. P. HUDSON. Guests included Miss Lillie BATCHELOR, of Mercer, Miss Ruth BATCHELOR, of Mercer, and also a Mr. Batchelor, of Mercer. Dr. & Mrs. NORWELL will make their home at Alhambra, the fine old country home of the groom’s parents.
Mr. Geo. BLACKWELL and Miss Mabel JOHNSON were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents on Thursday evening, January 29th, Rev. R. M. KING officiating.
Miss Neppie Bond HARBERT and Mr. Sidney READ were married Wednesday evening at the Central Baptist Church, Memphis, at 8:30 p. m. The bride is the daughter of Judge John R. BOND, of this city.
Mason Enterprise:Mr. & Mrs. J. G. HAMBLET announce the marriage of their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, to Mr. Richard Leland MERRELL at 8 p. m. February 12th at the Presbyterian church. No cards issued locally.
Cassius HAYWOOD, son of Capt. R. W. HAYWOOD was in the city this week, visiting his father. He is now with the Standard Oil Company.
Mr. Alexander MILLER died at his residence near Danceyville January 25, 1903, after many months of suffering. He was born October, 1823. He was twice married; the first to Miss Lucinda RHEA, who departed this life in 1892, and the second time to Miss Jane CRAWFORD, who survives him. No children blessed either marriage, but he was a father to a niece, Miss Mary ERWIN, whom he reared and educated. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church Friday morning. His remains were laid to rest in the Danceyville cemetery.
