Susan SHANKS, age 16, is listed in the 1860 census for War Gap, Hawkins Co., TN.  She is listed with her mother, Nancy SHANKS (41), and siblings Jacob (21), James (20), Jane (18), Emaline (11), Henrey (3), George (2), Sarah (1) and another person Floid HEARTLEY (4).  Nancy’s occupation appears as “widow farm.”  No birthplaces are given, and all are listed “white.” I’m trying to determine if this is my g-grandmother Susan M. SHANKS, b 11-28-1843 (in TN or VA), d 06-19-1926 (in Centralia, Lewis Co., WA).  By 1868, my g-g-m Susan had married McDaniel (Mack) BARTLEY (BARTLET, BARTLETT) b 10-25-1844 (probably Surry Co., NC or Grayson Co., VA), d 01-24-1938 (in Port Angeles, WA).  (McDaniel’s parents: Elijah b 1827, Prudence b 1825.)  Susan and McDaniel appear in the 1880 census in Rocky Sta. Dist., Lee Co., VA with their children Cornelia, Scott, and Flora (my g-m).  Daughter Nannie was born later.  Susan and McDaniel moved to Solo, Texas Co., MO by 1900, then later lived in Iowa and WA.  All records list Susan and her children as “white,” although family history says she was Native American.  Our only picture of her confirms this is possible.  However, the family was said to be “Black Dutch” when they lived in Iowa, so a Melungeon connection is also possible. Snail Mail:  3423 W. 98th Street, Overland Park, KS  66206.

1. DANIEL1 REYNOLDS was born Abt. 1780 in OH, and died in VA?/TN?. He married UNKNOWN WIFE OF DAVID REYNOLDS Bef. 1807 in VA?. Notes for DANIEL REYNOLDS: Daniel’s surname has also been noted as RANDLES, RANDOLS, & RUNNELS. 1820 Census of Ashe Co, NC 1831 Tax Rolls Show Him Living Next TO Clarkstons 1840 Census of Lee Co, VA 1850 Census Says Nancy’s father was born in Ohio There is a Daniel Randols in the 1800 Ashe Co, NC Census that is of an age to be this Daniel’s father. This Daniel apparently did not own land, as exhaustive searches have never shown him as paying land tax. Perhaps he was just successful at avoiding the tax people? The children of Daniel have never been proven by any documentation. It is compiled strictly by circumstantial evidence and proximity. All of this needs to be verified before taken as fact. Children of DANIEL REYNOLDS and UNKNOWN are:
