Tennessee during this time period I would love to hear from you. This WHITE and WRIGHT family originated from Virginia.

LEMARR / LEMAR / LAMAR: A group of us are trying to trace our Lemarr ancestry and can’t get beyond a Mary Lemar who lived in the early part of the 1800’s, around Campbell and Claiborne counties. We know that there were some Lemarrs who lived in Hawkins County and wonder if there might not be a connection. Mary Lemar had three sons: Isaac Newton, James Madison and David Franklin. We think that she married a Lemarr, but we just don’t know. If you can help us at all, please contact me.

I am looking for personal information on my great-great grandfather Moses McGINNIS (b. 1788 in Washington Co., VA-d. 1873 in Hancock Co., TN) and his family. He was son of Edward McGinnis (d. Grainger Co. 1817) and married to Mary Wolfe (1796-1864) in 1811. Buried at McGinnis family cemetery in Flat Gap, TN (Hancock Co.). Lived in Grainger, Hawkins, and Hancock counties. I hear that Moses was a preacher and had 17 children. I am most interested in information on the three sons (James, Absolom, and Edward Scott) who perished between the years 1862-1864, one in Macon, GA during the time of Sherman’s ravages. If anyone has information on possible war service of these men, I would like to know. But I am interested in any information that anyone might have on the McGinnis family in these counties–including information concerning my great-grandfather Charles McGINNIS. Thanks.

VAUGHN,Jonathan b. ca 1800 TN Jonathan Vaughn can be found in Hawkins Co., TN in the 1830 census. His father left a will in Hawkins Co in 1820. He names the following children: Polly Wilson, Benjamin, Isham, daughter Clary, William, Jonathan, and Agathe. Does anyone know anything about these children? Jonathan went to Grainger Co in 1840 and Claiborne Co in 1850 then I have lost track of him. Does anyone know where he went? His wife was listed as Spicy in 1850 and this name seemed to pass down for five generations. Would love to from all VAUGHN researchers in Hawkins, Grainger and Hancock Counties in TN.

James Monroe Finley, born Jan 14, 1817 in Hawkins County to William and Sarah Finley. I do not have a maiden name for Sarah. James married Virginia Ann Smith September 17, 1857. At some point he moved to Missouri. Family tradition (my great-grandfather admitted to my aunt) has it that we are part Indian. We figure that James would be either 1/2 or 1/4 Indian. We also heard that he left home when he was young, went to California for gold, went to either South America or Central America, found gold and returned with gold coins with his likeness on them and gave them to his children and bought his children land. I believe he is one of three brothers. Family story also has it that, I believe it was him or his father, and his brothers lived near each other and one of them were bushwhacked. The men came to this brothers house and the Finley made lots of noise and scared the bushwhackers away. I’d really like to find someone with more information on this branch of my family.
