Greene County is located in East Tennessee, one of the state’s three “Grand Divisions,” and is named for Major General Nathanael Greene, a patriot of the American Revolution.

The Washington District of NC was established as a “county” by the General Assembly of North Carolina in 1777 and was organized as a county on February 23, 1778. Greene County was taken from Washington County in 1783. Greene County was established by an Act of the North Carolina general assembly on April 18, 1783. Greeneville is the county seat.
