DAILY APPEAL, Memphis, Tennessee, July 4, 1895:
A COURTHOUSE BURNING Lexington, Tenn., July 1 — The courthouse and very nearly all the county records were destroyed by fire at about 3 o'clock this morning. It is believed to have been the work of an incendiary, and some people think it is the result of the quarterly court appointing a committee to investigate the official conduct of some of the county officers in the management of the financial affairs, while others are of the opinion that the fire originated through carelessness of some young people who had assembled in the courthouse in the evening to rehearse for a concert. The loss to the county is estimated at about $15,000, with no insurance. |
