Gorman Family

Stephen Gorman came from Ireland during the potato famine. He and one brother stowed away on a cattle boat, and landed in Phil., PA. We know he had one son named John S. Gorman and we are sure there are others?

Somehow John Gorman settled in Crockett Co and marred Sallie Ann Betts. Sallie Ann Betts was the daugther of William Allen Betts and Mary Ann Kilzer.

John and Sallies children:

Lonnie Gorman – Born April 14, 1894
Willie Gorman – Born Dec 26, 1897
Kate Lee Gorman Avery – Born April 16, 1889
John Dee Penn Gorman – 1901–1945
Della Gorman Knox – buried at Nance Cemetery
James Henry Gorman – buried at Nance Cemetery

Gilliland Family

This family is very large and hard to layout in short form. I could extend most of these families much further but it is against the rules to include anyone still living. There is much research remaining to be done on these families but I’m not getting any younger and the years are passing rapidly. I’ve made a few corrections and some new discoveries since my 1997 book,”The Gillilands of Western Crockett Co. Tn.”

I hope you enjoy viewing “Gilliland & Kin of Crockett Co. Tennessee”, including several photos.

I want to publicly thank Natalie Huntley, for her assistance & patience getting this family history online. She is a beautiful lady at heart.
I also thank Mrs. Diane Brown for sharing information on the Riley family.

SECTION #1My Great Great Grandparents:
James Gilliland age 38, born 1812 in Tennessee [View Tombstone] and wife Sarah (Black) Gilliland age 35, born 1815 in South Carolina are found in 1850 Henry County, Tn. in the rural community of Blood River, not far from Buchannan and northeast of Paris, Tn. James was a farmer and preacher by (occupation) and was preacher of the Blood River Christian Church, (taken from the book, “History of Henry County Churches”, by E. McLeod Johnson).
James & Sarah had 10 children, 9 born in Tennessee and 1 born in Missouri:
1. John F. Gilliland – born 1831 Tn. – my Great Grandfather moved from Henry Co. Tn. to Crockett Co. Tn.
2. Elizabeth – born 1834 Tn. – no information
3. Samuel G. – born 1836 Tn. – moved to Texas then Arkansas, more information below
4. Mary – born 1839 Tn. – no information
5. Tabitha Jane – born 1841 Tn.- moved to Missouri with the family
6. Alexander C. – born May,1846 Tn. – moved to Missouri with the family, more information below
7. Emmantha – born 1849 Tn. – no information
8. William T. – born 1852 Tn. – moved to Missouri with family
9. James H. – born 1854 Tn. – moved to Missouri with family
10. (Ben) Benjamin – born 1859 in Missouri
I searched for several years to find where this family moved to and finally found them in Mo., Ar. & Texas.
James & Sarah left Henry Co. Tennessee sometime after 1854 and moved across the Mississippi River into Missouri. I could not find this family in 1860, but I find them in 1870 Carroll County, Missouri which is several miles west of St. Louis. In 1870 James was age 59 and Sarah was 56. James was a farmer and the children remaining at home in 1870 are: Tabitha Jane age 29; Alexander C. age 23; William T. age 18; James H. age 16; & (Ben) Benjamin (born in Missouri) age 11
I don’t know what happened to Elizabeth, Mary or Emmantha, perhaps they remained in Tennessee and I may yet find what happened to those girls.
Lets’ look at children numbers 1, 6, & 9 from the numbered list above.
# 1 – John F. Gilliland – born 1831 Tn.
Made his home in western Crockett Co. Tn. We will look at his large family and descendants in Section three of this writing.

# 6 – Alexander C. Gilliland – born May 1846 Tn.
I don’t know where or how, but Alexander lost one of his arms but he could tie his shoes with one hand. He came back to Crockett Co. Tn. at least 3 times to visit his brother John F. & wife Sarah Gilliland and their descendants. My father said Alexander would always bring the children some candy. I learned from a descendant in Hill, Mo. that Alexander was the 2nd husband of a lady named Rebecca. 1900 – I find the first evidence of his children in 1900 Carroll County Missouri. In 1900 Alexander C. was a widower, born May, 1846, was age 54 and his son Joseph Gilliland, age 18, born Aug.1881 in Mo. is living with him. Joseph’s mother was also born in Mo. 1910 – Alexander, now age 63, a widower, still living in Missouri in the home of his daughter Alice (Gilliland) Hull age 26 born 1883/84 in Mo. and her husband Herbert Hull age 31 and their children: Herbie H. age 9, Cordie B. age 8, and Alex E. age 1. Living next door to the Hull family is Alexander’s son, Joseph Gilliland now age 29 born 1881 in Mo. and wife Stella age 20, born 1890 in Mo.,. Joseph & Stella now have one son, Glin, age 1 born 1909 in Mo. 1920 – Alexander C. Gilliland, now age 73, retired, living alone in the township of Hill, Mo., Carroll Co., but he lives in the same township as his children, Joseph & Alice, and his grandchildren.

SECTION #2

Crockett County, Tn. was officially established in 1872 from parts of Dyer, Gibson, Haywood & Madison counties.
Chestnut Bluff,Tn., located mid-western Crockett County,(originally part of Dyer Co.), is within walking distance of the south fork of the “Forked Deer River”. Chestnut Bluff became a large village and river landing point where goods were received, shipped or traded, also a voting precinct. As the village grew there were doctors, drug stores, general stores, post office, cotton gin, grist mill, saw mill, barber shop, blacksmith, and even a graveyard, Church, and saloon, but not in that order.

Frog Jump, Tn., It has been said many times that folks in and around Frog Jump are nearly all kin to each other, after studying this family line you will probably say the same. Frog Jump is located in south-western Crockett Co.,(originally part of Haywood Co.), is a short distance from the south fork of the” Forked Deer River”. The people here are said to be a settled type of folk, but don’t get-um riled because they all like to hunt and they all stick together. In the early days there were hundreds of acres of forest and underbrush all along the river bottom; and the river itself was full of fish and easy to catch. The contour of the land was good and the soil was fertile. All this made an ideal area in which to settle, farm and raise a family. Here was wild game and fish for food, trees for erecting buildings, heating and cooking, good grass for the livestock, good neighbors, and necessary supplies could be obtained a short distance away at Chestnut Bluff or at Frog Jump. So without further ado, let’s stop off here and meet some of my kin folks that settled in Western Crockett County Tennessee.

SECTION # 5The Bailey Family
Robert (Bob) Edward & Maggie Lee (Cox) Bailey Family [View Photo]
Excerpt from Bailey family history compiled by my aunt Elizabeth Bailey, deceased.
My maternal G-G-Grandfather;
James Allen Bailey came from England and settled in Abingdon, Virginia. Legend goes that he once owned nearly all the town of Abingdon, Va. but when he revisited England he got into gambling and lost nearly everything.
James Allen Bailey, born Sept. 6, 1817—died March 10, 1887 age 70. He married on June 15, 1838 in Va. to Harriet Sue White born Nov. 15,__?_,– died Aug. 12, 1862.
They had 13 children: 5 daughters & 8 sons:

(1) Walter Warren Bailey, July 17, 1839-July 8,1863, killed in the Civil War (2) Laura White Bailey, 1841-1870 (3) Thomas White Bailey, July 22, 1842-Mar. 15, 1864 also killed in the Civil War (4) Oscar Shaver Bailey 1844-1919 (5) William Hill Bailey 1845-1863 (6) Harriet Virginia Bailey 1846-__?__ (7) Louisa Florence Bailey 1848-1880 (8) James Bailey 1850-__?__ (9) Gustavus Lampkins Bailey Nov. 14, 1851-__?__ (10) Milton White Bailey 1853-__?__ (11) Frank Bailey 1855-__?__ (12) Ella Bailey 1857-__?__ (13) Corena Dixie Bailey 1861-1889.

My maternal Great Grandfather
Gustavus Lampkins Bailey married Frances Virginia O’Bryan from somewhere in middle Tn. and she was a one armed school teacher. Frances got her arm caught in a sorghum mill when she was very young and had to be amputated. Gustavus was a graduate of Emory & Henry College at Emory, Va. and he also taught school.
After Gustavus & Frances married, James Allen Bailey disowned his son for marrying a one-armed working girl. Gustavus & Frances ( and a brother Oscar Shaver Bailey) moved to Texas via covered wagon. Being dissatisfied in Texas they moved back to the flatlands of Dunklin county, Missouri where My maternal Grandfather (Bob) Robert Edward Bailey was born on July 18, 1889. Bob’s mother died when he was 5 years old (1894) and his father died 2 years later (1896) leaving 5 orphaned children.
Bob & siblings lived with his aunt Jenny Hayes, which was a disaster, until his older sister Harriet married Charlie Koonce of near Halls, Tn. and took them in. Later Bob went to live with his sister Sue and husband Joe Moody at Chestnut Bluff, Tennessee. They were neighbors to the Cox family.

Let’s stop here and talk a little about the Cox family.
Edwin Leetin Cox was the son of Thomas Cox and wife Annie King. Edwin Leetin Cox married Callie Donnie Nunn sometime in the mid-seventies, abt. 1875. Calllie Donnie Nunn, born Jan. 23, 1855 was the oldest daughter of Joel Henry Nunn & wife Margaret Eleanor (Burke) Nunn who married abt. 1853/54.
After Callie Donnie was born came Mary (Nunn) Farmer, Eleanor (Nunn) Parker, Maggie Elizabeth (Nunn) Yearwood and baby Joel Henry Nunn ll, born abt. 1863. When baby Joel was only 2 days old the Yankees came and took everything.

Let us now go back to the neighbors of Joe & Sue Moody with whom Bob Bailey was living, these neighbors being Edwin Leetin and Callie Donnie (Nunn) Cox who had several children;
Ella, Thomas, Nina, Cecel, Earl, May, Maggie Lee Cox (my grandmother), Edna & Egbert (twins) and Mary the youngest.
Bob Bailey was much attracted to black haired, blue-eyed Maggie Lee Cox and when her father Edwin Leetin Cox and family left the farm at Chestnut Bluff (Maggie’s birthplace) to move to Bemis, Tn., he invited the orphaned boy (Bob) to go along. Bob needed no second invitation, he went, and there in the little cotton town of Bemis, Tn. (Bob) Robert Edward Bailey & Maggie Lee Cox were married on Dec. 13, 1908. He was 19 and she was 17, it was a wonderful marriage that lasted for 11 children and 56 years.
Bob & Maggie Bailey’s 11 children:
(1) first birth premature girl (2) (my mother) Callie Frances, May 24,1910 (3) Edwin O’Bryan, May 20,1912 (4) Sallie May, July 18,1914 (5) Maggie Elizabeth, Nov.24, 1916 (6) Robert Thomas, Nov. 24, 1918 (7) Tracy Moran, Jan.28, 1921–died age 2 May, 1923 (8) Annie Laura, Nov.5,1923-June 21, 2011 (9) Millicent Faye, Nov.19, 1925 (10) Bascomb Donald, May 5, 1928 (11) Truma Rowena, May 23, 1933.
Annie Laura was the last member of this family to go and they will all be remembered and missed.

A Riley reunion was held on June 18, 2011 at Archers Chapel Methodist Church in Crockett Co. Tn. and was a big success.

Melissa Ella Faulkner

MELISSA ELLA FAULKNER
(My Grandmother)

Melissa Ella Faulkner Cates was born September 5, 1871 in Haywood County, Tennessee and was the daughter of GEORGE WASHINGTON FAULKNER AND HARRIETT SHEARIN.

Ella’s mother died on January 23, 1875 at the childbirth of Ella’s youngest brother Tobias (Toby) Faulkner. Her father was found dead in bed on March 19, 1877.

A guardian was appointed and she was placed with her brother, William. But this arrangement did not last long. She was then placed with a Mrs. Ward who lived by the river and loved to fish. This “fishing” was too dull for my grandmother who was vivacious and full of life. She went to visit her sister Caldonia or “Donie” and according to my grandmother “the old man fell in love with her because she was such a teaser and full of life.” He asked his wife if they could not keep her. So she finished growing up with her sister Donie.

She married TOLBERT FANNING CATES on January 27, 1889. They had nine children of which two girls died when young and the rest grew to maturity – that is, five girls and two boys.

My grandmother (mama) used to tell me she was part owner of three plantations when she married my grandfather. I really did not take her seriously as I was a Depression child and could not imagine her with an inheritance like that until I started to do genealogy work and sure enough I found the “Distribution of Shearin Property” to the Faulkner Children in the Minute Book “Q”, page 103 dated 15 August 1877.

When my mother died, I was less than two years old, Mama took my Dad and I in until my Dad married again.

I remember many things about her and learned much from her. We used to go to town and it would take us all afternoon to get around Court Square as she would greet people at every store and they would tease her. They could hear her laughing before she got to their store.

When I would say “I can’t”, she would admonish me to never say “I can’t and that I could do anything anyone else could do.”

She often told the story “that she would put me in the front yard so she could get her work done. But I would manage to crawl several steps to be with her with “burnt hands and feet.” Then she would have guilt feelings .

Another trauma I had in my life was “bed wetting”. Mama never scolded me (even after I was a big kid) but would get me up in the middle of the night and clean me up while others would scold and shame me. I could not help it.

After my grandfather died while Mama was young, he had moved the family to town to get her out of the country. She did not like close neighbors so she rented the lots next to the house and planted cotton in it to pay for the land until she had almost the whole block.

Mama always sat in the “Amen Corner” of the Church and me with her or her daughters. One time the Church had a controversy and split. Someone called and asked my grandmother which Church she was going to. She replied “where I always go. I don’t go to worship man but GOD.”

We grandchildren would go to her house on “big” days and of course we were told not ask for something to eat as soon as we arrived. We would be like cherubs and sit quietly but watching Mama. She would get behind everyone and motion for us to follow her. Mama would take us to the kitchen and you can imagine all the food she had, particularly bowls of baked sweet potatoes and buckets of “boiled custard.”

Well, these are only a few examples but we all remember her sociability, her independence, her determination and her great love for her family.

An example, my brothers tell of her independence was: that my mother sent them to mow her yard. When they got there she took the mower and told them to go sit down. When my mother asked my brothers about them letting her do it, they said they were afraid not to do what she said.

SHE WAS A FAULKNER!

John Emison and Margaret Boals Family

I have chosen to use the Emison spelling in this genealogy report since it is the one in my database. The name has been equally spelled Emerson and Emmerson in the early records of Madison, Haywood and Crockett. The original spelling has not been verified by any researcher, so the choice of the individual families, census takers and record keepers prevailed in most instances.

The origin of the Emison lineage, prior to those immigrants to America, has not been found. An earlier researcher advanced the theory that they were descended from Emer, the first Milesian King of Ireland, who shared the throne jointly with his brother Eremon. After considerable research this cannot be found in any of the Irish records I have collected in my library. A thorough search of my Scottish records have not revealed Emison/Emersons in the clans of that country. This leaves another theory that the Emersons were of Saxon origin and were in England prior to the invasion of William the Conqueror. James I, of England, promoted a massive transportation of English and Scottish people to Ireland in order to dispossess the native Irish Clans of their heritage. Oliver Cromwell, in his destructive march throughout the island, brought in many of his followers, to complete the job of leaving, for the most part, the native Irish landless. It is possible that the Emison and McKnight families found themselves in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland as a result of one of those plantations.

The immigrant ancestor of all the Emisons in Madison, Haywood and Crockett, Tennessee, John Emison, arrived with the family of his aunt, Rebecca (Batty) McKnight on the British Brig, “Alexis” out of Greenock, Scotland. A list of passengers intending to go by British Brig, Alexis, of Greenock to Wilmington, North Carolina included 17 passengers, sworn 29 Mar 1804. Departure date has not been found, but it was probably shortly after the passengers had all signed on. Listed were the family members of Hu McKnight, age 48, farmer, from Belfast, Ireland. Other family members were: James McKnight, age 54 (14), farmer, out of Belfast, Ireland; Batty McKnight, age 36, farmer, out of Belfast, Ireland; Margaret McKnight, age unknown, out of Belfast, Ireland; John McKnight, child, out of Belfast, Ireland; Batty McKnight, Jr, child, out of Belfast, Ireland; and Elizabeth McKnight, child, out of Belfast, Ireland. (Handbook on Irish Genealogy”, by Donal F. Begley, transcribed and submitted to the Internet by Alison Davis). The age of James McKnight later proves to be a son, age 14, and the listing of John Emison as John McKnight cannot be explained, but one can only conjecture that it was for passage purpose.

Greenock, Scotland is on the Firth of Clyde in Strathclyde located near Port Glasgow. In 1804, Greenock was a big shipbuilding center, and an important embarkation point for emigrants leaving Scotland for North America and Australia The convenience of Greenock for those Ulster immigrants was the fact that they had only to cross a short stretch of the Irish Sea to enter the Firth of Clyde that would take them up to it’s port at Greenock. The Alexis, and other ships sailing from Greenock, would probably have taken a northern route around Ireland until they reached the open sea..

The Alexis would have arrived in America at the mouth of the Cape Fear and traveled the 16 miles up the river to reach Wilmington, the destination of the first leg of the McKnight families’ migration to Moore County, North Carolina. The river had many stories to tell prior to the arrival of the Belfast immigrants, and it is possible that the McKnights had heard the tales of Edward Teach, “Blackbeard”, the pirate, who would sail down from his home at Bath to raid and put fear in the hearts of the settlers. The pirate, Stede Bonet, had been captured on the Cape Fear River, ridding the river of another dangerous individual. The river was navigable by large vessels for about 40 miles above Wilmington. From that point, long boats, lighters and large canoes would take travelers for 100 miles more. However the river, itself, was a dangerous place to travel, with it’s fluctuation of water levels, causing logs and sandbars to upset many of it’s travelers. Alligators were plentiful in it’s waters, and if those dangers were overcome, there was always the thieves who plied the waterways looking for some unsuspecting traveler to rob. By the time the McKnights arrived, there could be seen many plantations built along the river and the town of Fayetteville, about 27 miles up the river from Wilmington was heavily involved in the receiving of goods from inland, and shipping down the river for transport overseas. The Revolutionary War had disrupted the busy activities that had begun to take place before the war, but business was beginning to recover and the river was a busy place.

The Cape Fear River had it’s beginning two hundred miles up it’s course in the piedmont area, where the Haw and the Deep River came together in Chatham County. The McKnight’s destination could be reached by traveling up the river and branching off into the Deep River, which carried them to Moore County located on the river. This stretch would have used for it’s mode of transportation a flatboat, raft, or perriauger, which had been build to navigate the inland rivers. Moore County, was by that time, a settled county, with the majority of it’s population Scottish. It was recovering from the Revolutionary War where several skirmishes and battles had been fought on it’s soil. Land grants were being issued to those soldiers who had fought in the war, and many of the grants were for land in the newly emerging lands that had been Indian territory prior to 1821 in the western part of Tennessee.

Hugh McKnight is listed in the 1810 and 1820 Censuses of Moore County. In the same vicinity were: Robert Boles, father of Margaret (Peggy) Boals; Andrew Cole, father of Susannah Cole, who was the mother of Margaret (Peggy) Boals; and Archibald Boyd, who married one of the Emison’s daughters. Other familiar families who themselves, or their children, were later found in Madison, Haywood and Crockett Counties were: Asa, John, Abraham, Isaac, John Sr., John, Jr., and Jesse Sowell, Thomas, Henry and George Cox; John and Archibald Medlin; Jacksons; Pearce; Perrys; Malcolm, Nevan, and Alexander Clark; Archibald, Alexander, and John Ray; James Freeman; William Coffer; Silva, John, John B., Joseph, Richard, Thomas, Jr., Thomas, William, Benjamin, Elvina, George H., and James Cole; Peter and Murdock Ferguson; Charles Stewart; Flora, Daniel, and Donald McFarland; Archibald and Christian McMillan; John, Archibald and Donald Patterson; Henry Morris, John Baker, Tobias Fry, Warren Jones; John Cates; William Arnold; and Henry Bailey and many others.

John Emison married Margaret Boals, 1820, in Moore County. .Margaret Boals was the daughter of Robert Boals, Jr. who had married Susanne Cole, c1795, in Moore County, North Carolina. Susanne was the daughter of Andrew and Rebecca Cole. The arrival dates for the Boals and Cole families has not been established, but they were in Moore County prior to the arrival of the McKnights. Many of the Cole families of North Carolina are noted for their pottery which has been a family tradition for many generations. It has not been established whether the Coles of Moore County, were involved in the industry.

The first two children of John and Margaret Emison were born in Moore County, and before the birth of their third child, in 1825, the family had migrated to West Tennessee and settled in the Cotton Grove Community, in Madison County.

The route the Moore County families took to reach their West Tennessee destination could have been across North Carolina to connect with the Valley Pike Road that would have taken them to Long Island (now Kingsport) on the Holston River. Basically, their route would have then followed the route that Interstate Highway 40 now travels. The migration from North Carolina tended to take this route. South Carolinians wishing to move west took a route through Georgia and northern Alabama. The exact arrival date has not been determined definitely, but the later censuses record that the third child, Rebecca, born in 1825, was born in Tennessee. This indicates that she was born in Madison County or on the trail after coming into Tennessee. They are said to have settled in another area of Madison county before moving to their final location.

In 1832, the couple moved to the area located in Madison County, that later became a part of Crockett County when it was formed in 1871. On June 4, 1838, the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee passed an Act establishing the public school system in the state. On June 4th 1838, a record was make of the elected school commissioners in each district of Madison County, Tennessee, and a listing of the parents with number of children attending the schools. In District #1 the following parents, of interest, were listed: Thomas McKnight, 1; Hugh McKnight, 5; and William McKnight, 2. District # 9 had: Kitchen Hathaway, 1; John Carter, 2; James Bowls, 2; John Emerson, 4; Micajah Midgett, 3; Joshua Cozart, 2; and Gray Medling, 4.

After the move to the new area, John Emison went into debt for a large tract of land and died before the debt could be retired. James Emison, the oldest son, went into the stave business, with his mother, and was able to pay the remaining money due on the mortgage. Some of the original tract of land is still in the possession of some of their descendants.

Cypress Methodist Episcopal Church, South was organized in 1831. John and Margaret Emison, their oldest daughter, Susan Laman, son-in-law, Daniel Laman; and five sons, William, John, James, Robert and Benjamin Emison, were charter members of the church. They are all buried in the cemetery at Cypress. The church was placed on the Cageville Circuit in the Madison and Haywood Conference. The first building was a log house 20′ by 30′. It remained the main building until 1871, when a plain frame building 35′ by 56′ replaced it. Trustees at the time of the property deed was executed in 1871 were: A. C. McMillan, James Emmison, J. C. Bowls, W. M. Emmison, and Dan’l Layman. By 1871, the church had been placed in the Memphis Conference.

Following is a four generation chart of the descendants of John and Margaret (Peggy) Boals Emerson. The notes added are those I have written into the records. My original notes would have made the report so cumbersome that it would have been very difficult to follow the general outline of the descent. In addition, it would have taken up approximately 75 to 100 pages. By digesting the notes, I have been able to bring it down to a manageable size. Anyone wishing the complete descent, with notes, can contact me and I will be glad to share a Gedcom file with you. An effort has been made to include the female lines of the children of John and Margaret Emison in this report. It is indexed to facilitate easier researching.

Major Joel Henry Dyer

First Settler of Crockett County, Tennessee

Defining the areas of Haywood, Madison, Dyer and Gibson counties that were to become a part of Crockett County required a close look at the boundaries of all four counties. In addition, a search was made into the settlement patterns and timeline that took place in the settling of the counties. In order to determine the person that history reveals as the first settler, it was necessary to determine the first county settled. After a close examination of early records, it was evident that Madison County was the first county formed of the four counties that became a part of Crockett County.

Records reveal that the first settler who took up his land grant in the area that became Crockett County was Major Joel Henry Dyer, who moved to his tract of land, in the fall of 1821.

Major Dyer and his large family can be given credit for making the most impact on the early settlement and civil affairs of three of the counties, Madison, Dyer and Haywood, that gave up some of their territories for the establishment of Crockett County.

Major Dyer’s former homestead, located in the area that encompasses the first civil district of the county, was the first plantation established in the area that was to become Crockett County. A grant of 831 ½ acres was made to Joel and Sallie Jones Dyer and they moved onto the tract of land, 28 Sep 1821. The grant was located south of the Middle Fork of the Forked Deer River in northwestern Madison County (later Crockett County), Tennessee. The grants read as follows: To all whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye that by virtue of Certificate No. 1941, dated the 10th day of October 1820, issued by the Board of Commissioners of West Tennessee to Joel Dyer and Sally Jones Dyer, his wife and their heirs a certain tract or parcel of land containing eight hundred and thirty one and one half acres by survey bearing date the 10th of Feb 1821, lying in the 10th/surveyor’s/district in _ county (left blank as the land when entered was technically a part of Stewart County, but became part of Madison County when it was established late in 1821) in range three and section ten and bounded as follows, to wit, Beginning at William Pillow’s north boundary line of Entry No. 12232 poles west of his north east corner at a sweet gum and black oak, thence north three hundred and twenty poles to a black walnut and black gum, thence west four hundred and nineteen and five tenth poles to a dogwood and black oak, thence south two hundred and forty four poles and five tenths of a pole to a black oak and post oak on the line of Entry No. 64, thence east nineteen and four tenth poles to his corner, then south seventy five and five tenth poles to Pillow’s corner, thence east four hundred and one tenth poles to the beginning with the hereditaments and appurtenances. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its hereditaments and appurtenances to the said Joel Dyer and Sally Jones Dyer and their heirs forever. In witness whereof William Carroll Governor of the State of Tennessee hath hereunto set his hand and caused the Great Seal of the State to be affixed at Murfreesboro on the 11th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two, and of the independence of the United States the forty sixth. Signed by the governor, William Carroll and Daniel Graham, Secretary of the State. (Note: This was during the period of time Murfreesboro was the capitol of the State.)

The above survey indicates that there were no inhabitants living on the adjoining properties, since Colonel William Pillow, a soldier of the War of 1812, had received the grant for his services and settled elsewhere. A current map would locate the plantation split by the present Adair Road and split again by Pearson’s Creek.

Major Dyer owned many additional acres of land in West Tennessee, but this was his home-place. His grave has no marker and the location is in doubt, but he was probably buried in an unmarked grave in the Pearson Cemetery, on Joe Edwards Road. Major Dyer’s farm was located in this area and this was the place where he and his second wife, Sarah Jones Dyer raised their large family. Their children were Dracula C. Dyer, Joel S. Dyer, Charles C. Dyer, James M. Dyer, Cornelia J. Dyer, and Sarah Ann Dyer.

Major Dyer’s oldest son, Colonel Robert Henry Dyer, preceded his father to Madison County arriving in 1820. Colonel Dyer was one of the motivating citizens who help to form the new government of Madison County, and was one of the first Commissioners. The remainder of Major Dyer’s children by his first wife followed him to Madison County.

Joel Dyer, William H. Dyer, and Robert Henry Dyer signed the petition, dated, 18 day of August 1821, to the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee asking that the assembly relieve them of their hardships in living in the unorganized state of the area and requesting that the area be formed into counties to better serve their needs. Robert H. Dyer andWilliam H. Dyer were sons of Major Joel Dyer by his first wife. Major Dyer’s daughters, by his first marriage, were Maria Dyer who married Daniel Madding; Charlotte Dyer, who married Blackman Coleman; and Mary Henrietta Dyer, who married Henry L. Gray.

Major Joel Henry Dyer received his commission in the Tennessee State Militia, in Hawkins County, 4 Oct 1796. Colonel Robert Henry Dyer received his commission and appointment to the Regiment of Calvary, 5th Brigade, 16 Oct 1807, in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He received his promotion to Captain in the same brigade on, 5 August 1810. Colonel Dyer was commander of the 1st Regiment of Volunteer Mounted Calvary in the War of 1812.

Captain Blackman Coleman’s company served under the command of Colonel John Coffee’s Tennessee Volunteer Calvary. Captain Coleman served as County Court Clerk for Rutherford County, Tennessee from the founding of the county until he resigned to move to Haywood County where he became County Court Clerk, serving until his death.

On 20 Jun 1823, Major Dyer, with his wife’s consent, conveyed to Blackman Coleman, in trust for Mary H. Dyer, wife of Henry L. Gray and her son, James William Gray and any other children she might have, the western half of the 831 ½ acre tract granted to them, reserving for himself and his wife that portion (east) on which the “improvements,” residence and outhouses were located. The Grays took up residence on the property and were living there when Major Dyer died.

On May 19, 1825, a few days before his death, Major Dyer conveyed in trust to Daniel Madding of Haywood County, Tennessee, for his wife, Sarah J. Dyer, the 416 1/8th acre eastern portion of the 831 ½ acres that had been granted them in 1822, being the tract where I now live along with 274 acres on the Middle Fork of the Forked Deed River on which William L. Mitchell, of Dyer County, held a 54 acre claim and Robert Hay held a 60 acre location claim; also 910 acres in Haywood County on the South Fork of the Forked Deer River, being a residue of 5000 acres granted by North Carolina to Benjamin Smith and later bought by Joel Dyer; a bond of John McIver for 740 acres; several notes due him; household furnishings and farming implements and the slaves, Jacob, Lydia and Tilla.

The above 910 acres, located in Haywood County, was where Sally Dyer lived in the 1830 census of Haywood County. She owned twenty slaves. Nearby is her son, Joel H. Dyer, Jr., listed owning five slaves. In addition, found living in Haywood County, in 1830, were Joel Dyer’s older children, Charlotte, and her husband Blackman Coleman; and Mary L., with her husband, Henry L. Gray. Colonel Robert Dyer and Major William Dyer, sons of Joel Dyer remained in Madison County, Tennessee.

Major Joel Henry Dyer died, 11 Jun 1825. His obituary in the first newspaper for the new county follows: 18 Jun 1825: At his residence in this county on Saturday morning last, Major Joel Dyer, aged seventy-one, one of the few surviving soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Major Dyer was an early settler in Middle Tennessee, from whence he removed to this District in 1821. He was a man much respected for his benevolence of character and esteemed by all who knew him, as a good Citizen and an honest man. He has left an affectionate wife, and upwards of 100 descendants and a large number of relatives and friends to regret his death. He was confined with the dropsy for several months and although in great pain he bore his afflictions with fortitude and died without a murmur. Thus we see the soldiers of the Revolution falling around us like the leaves of the majestic oak, before an autumnal blast; but although they are consigned to their mother dust, their deeds of valour and the glorious result of their patriotic devotion to their country, will live in our recollections, and their names be handed down to the latest generation.

Sally Dyer sold the 415 acre plantation after her husband died, 15 Dec 1830, to Samuel Tomlin. She died on her plantation near Brownsville, 14 Dec 1831.

The Dyer plantation, in Crockett County, was sold several times finally winding up, for the most part, being owned by Henry J. Pearson, whose name the creek that runs through the property derives it name.

Major Dyer owned land in the area that was to become Dyer County, and the county was named in his honor.

Dunlap Family

August 1978

This is a brief history of two migrations, involving citizens of Crockett County, Tennessee, who, in 1879 or 1880, left Gadsden, for Pope County, Arkansas, and later, in the 1890’s, went on to Wagoner, Oklahoma, which was then in Indian Territory.

This information was gathered by W. Herbert Riead, now 91 years old, of Sierra Madre, California. After the death, in 1971, of his wife, Ada (Dunlap) Riead, he began soliciting, collecting, and writing down, all that he could find concerning her ancestors, to pass on to the younger generations. He has assembled a wealth of material.

He remarks: “In searching I have visited many family members in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and corresponded with numerous others. In each and every one, I found good Christians, honorable citizens, successful men and women in the business and educational world.”

In 1973 he visited Crockett County, Tennessee, in the company of his wife’s cousins, Novella (Kee) Green of Jackson, Tennessee, and other members of their family. Near Gadsden he inquired if someone might be able to provide information on Dunlaps. The party was directed to the residence of Earl T. and Mary (Williams) Dunlap in Fruitvale. This couple graciously invited them into their home. In this first discussion, one of the facts established was that Earl T. Dunlap and Ada (Dunlap) Riead had grandfathers who were brothers, James M. Dunlap (1824-1880) and Wm. (Billy) Dunlap (1832-1883).

The meeting was the beginning of a new and precious friendship. Independent of each other, Earl T. Dunlap and W. Herbert Riead had compiled much family history. Through hard work in the next few years, they were to acquire a great deal more. Most of their census data and information on Tennessee property transfer records were painstakingly derived and generously shared with them by a retired college professor, Elizabeth (Craddock) Casale, who is a native of Humboldt, Tennessee, now living in Water Valley, Kentucky, and a descendant of James M. Dunlap.

The researchers were delighted to discover that Mary (Williams) Dunlap and Ada (Dunlap) Riead were also related. Mary’s great grandfather, Nathaniel Williams (1796-1862) was a brother of Ada’s great grandmother, Rebecca (Williams) Taylor (1800?-1881).

Earl T. Dunlap’s grandfather, James M. Dunlap, had come to Gibson County, Tennessee, a child with: his parents, Wm. D. Dunlap (1800-1846) and Mary (Hefley) Dunlap (1801-1875); his brothers, John M. Dunlap (1827 – 1886), Hilliard J. Dunlap (1829-1859), Wm. (Billy) Dunlap, George Dunlap (1837-1858); and his sisters, Margaret (Dunlap) James (1822-?-??), and Mary Ann (Dunlap) Raines (1834-1907). Mary (Hefley) Dunlap’s mother, Margaret (Hamilton) Hefley, more than 60 years old, and other Hefley relatives, arrived in the area, at about the same time. Wm. D. Dunlap and Mary (Hefley) Dunlap had two more children, in West Tennessee, Henry Dunlap (1840-1912) and Rebecca Jane (Dunlap) Griffin (1842-1914).

Mary (Williams) Dunlap’s great grandfather, Nathaniel Williams, and others of the Williams family, reached Madison County, Tennessee, in the 1830’s. Among them were Isaiah Paschal Taylor (1809-1884) and Rebecca (Williams) Taylor. All were originally from North Carolina. They had settled first in Wilson County, Tennessee, where Isaiah and Rebecca were married.

Isaiah and Rebecca (Williams) Taylor became the parents of sons, Thomas Turner Taylor (1833-??), Wm. D. (Doc) Taylor (1839-??), John Wesley Taylor (1844-1922) and daughters, Martha Ann (Taylor) Williams (1834-??), Sarah Elizabeth (Taylor) Dunlap (1835-1897), Harriett (Taylor) Dunlap (1837-1916), and Rebecca (Taylor) Medlin (1841-1929). We do not know how many of these children were born after the move to Madison County, Tennessee.

By 1839, all the various families we have mentioned had resettled in that part of West Tennessee which would later become Crockett County.

The years passed. In 1856 Wm. (Billy) Dunlap married Harriett Taylor. They had seven children: Hilliard George Washington Dunlap (1859-1921); Mary Ann Rebecca (Becky) (Dunlap) Ellington (1862-1929); William Thomas Whitfield Dunlap (1863-1940); Sarah Lucinda Elizabeth (Lizzie) (Dunlap) Brewer (1866-1895); John Henry Paschal Dunlap (1868-1941); Jesse Lee Dunlap (1870-1960); Edward Hall Dunlap (1873-1938).

The Cornatzars moved from Rutherford County, Tennessee, to Madison County, Tennessee, in the 1850’s. There was: Thomas Rooker Cornatzar (1826-1886); his wife, Susanna Margaret (Bowman) Cornatzar (1834-1916);
Thomas’ mother, Sarah (Wherry) Cornatzar (1804-??); and Thomas’ brothers, Charles E. Cornatzar (1830?-??), Wm. D. Cornatzar (1837-??), James Robert Cornatzar (1842-1914), and George M. Cornatzar (1845-1909) (George M. Cornatzar m. Martha “Mattie” Azalea Hall in 1873, daughter of Margaret T. Carter and Jonathan “Shack” Hall, Jr., granddaughter of John Carter and Sarah (Hefley) Carter). All had been born in Tennessee except Sarah (Wherry) Cornatzar, born in Kentucky. All of Thomas’ children–George Cornatzar (1853?-1878), Mary Lumira (Cornatzar) Warren (1856-1938), Julia Ann Eliza (Cornatzar) Dunlap (1860-1942, and Louisa Thomas (Cornatzar) Taylor (1869-1950)–were most likely born after his arrival in Madison County, Tennessee.

In 1878 Thomas Rooker Cornatzar’s daughter, Julia, married Hilliard G. Dunlap, in Crockett County, Tennessee. (Ada (Dunlap) Riead would be third of their nine children.) Clyde Hilliard Dunlap, Jr., one of their grandsons, of Modesto, California, writes: “Hilliard and Julia were 18 and 17 when they married. They had one child, (Ira George), when they decided to go to Arkansas. I believe that they heard from people going through that it might be better country, so they loaded in a wagon, in which they could sleep, and headed west.”

Hilliard, Julia, and baby son, Ira George Dunlap, Sr. (1878-1962), were not alone on this 300 mile journey, from Crockett County, Tennessee, to Pope County, Arkansas. There were probably more than thirty people in the wagon train. the ages of those whose names we know ranged from 54 down to one year. This group included grandparents, their children, and their children’s children, as in the Wm. (Billy) Dunlap, Hilliard G. Dunlap, Lemuel G. Ellington, and Thomas Rooker Cornatzar families. There was the family of Mary Ann (Carter) Reaves (daughter of John Carter and Sarah (Hefley) Carter ), Wm. (Billy) Dunlap’s first cousin, and, perhaps that of Thomas Turner Taylor, Harriett (Taylor) Dunlap’s oldest brother.

Veda (Dunlap) Stanbery, a Hilliard G. Dunlap granddaughter, of San Pedro, California, believes the families of John Granville Kee (brother of Louisa Adaline (Kee) Dunlap, wife of John M. Dunlap) and Samuel L. Kee were included, because Samuel was married to Lemuel G. Ellington’s sister, Louisa Parthenia, and that John Granville Kee would have been a brother or cousin of Samuel. (Later in West Tennessee, James Robert Cornatzar’s daughter, Mary Ann (Mollie) Cornatzar (1877-1961) would marry Otis Granville Kee (1879-1944), son of John Granville Kee (1845-1936). their children would be: Granville Hunter Kee, Mary Geneva (Kee) Jones, Ida Gay (Kee) Green, and Hazel Novella (Kee) Jones.)

Reviewing the federal census for Pope County, Arkansas, taken in June 1880, we recognize the names of many persons, recently come from West Tennessee. Among them are Hilliard G. Dunlap, 20, pedlar, with wife, Julia (Cornatzar) Dunlap, 19, and son, Ira, 1; Wm. (Billy) Dunlap, 47, farmer, with wife, Harriett (Taylor) Dunlap, 43, sons, Willie, 16, Johnny, 11, Jesse, 9, Ed, 7 and daughter, Lizzie, 14; Lemuel G. Ellington (1859-1909), 20, farmer, with wife Mary Ann (Becky) (Dunlap) Ellington, 18, and daughter Parthenia Elizabeth (1879-1945), one; Thomas Rooker Cornatzar, 54, farmer, with wife, Susanna (Bowman) Cornatzar, 45, and daughter, Louisa, 11; George W. Reaves (1831?-??), 49, farmer, with wife Mary Ann (Carter) Reaves (1829-??), 50, sons Christopher (?-?), 14, James (?-?), 9, and daughter, Georgia (1868-1923), 11; Thomas Turner Taylor, 47, farmer, with wife, Elizabeth (Hathaway) Taylor (1837-1908), 43, sons, James Monroe (1863-1942), 16, David (?-?), 9, and daughter, Nancy Rebecca (Nannie) (1867-1934), 13; John Granville Kee, 35, farmer, with wife, Rebecca E. (Young) Kee (1843-1887), 37, son, Otis Granville, 1, and daughter, Mary J. (1873-1905), 7; Samuel
L. Kee (?-?), 29, farmer, with wife Louisa Parthenia (Ellington) Kee (?-?), 24, son, James H. (?-?), 1, and daughter, Ada C. (?-?), 4.

W. Herbert Riead writes: “Now the unanswered question is, who, if anyone, picked out Pope County, Arkansas, for the future home of these families? It is hard to feel so many, likely with very little resources to fall back on in an emergency, would have made this move without someone having first been to Arkansas. Had one or more of them gone to locate a suitable community, or, was there already some kin settled in Pope County who had influenced them?”

Elizabeth (Craddock) Casale, who found Thomas Turner Taylor to have sold his two tracts of land in Crockett County in 1877, believes he may have gone ahead; otherwise why would he have disposed of his Tennessee property at that early date? Thomas Turner Taylor’s granddaughter, Georgia (Ashmore) Threlkeld, of Russellville, Arkansas, remembers her mother, Nancy (Taylor) Ashmore, telling her that she, Nancy, was 12 when her family came to Arkansas. This would have made that family’s arrival between March 1879 and March 1880. We only know for certain that they were in Pope County in June 1880.

The wagon train which brought Hilliard G. and Julia (Cornatzar) Dunlap from Tennessee to Arkansas must have traveled between October 1, 1879, when Wm. (Billy) and Harriett (Taylor) Dunlap sold their land in Crockett County, Tennessee, to her youngest brother, John W. Taylor; and April 11, 1880, when in the minutes of the session Shiloh Congregation, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in Pope County, Arkansas, for that date was written: “Prayer by Brother Dunlap who was admitted as an advisory member. Lately from the Cumberland Presbytery of Tennessee.

Why did all these persons leave Tennessee? The reasons for the emigration were, first, hope for better farmland in the new country. W. Herbert Riead found in Goodspeed’s book on Crockett and Chester Counties, Tennessee that Crockett County’s poorest land was near Gadsden. Earl T. Dunlap said this area was known as “the barrens”. Geneva (Ellington) Vermillion of Spavinaw, Oklahoma, daughter of Lemuel G. Ellington, wrote: “I recall my mother, Mary Ann (Dunlap) Ellington, (Hilliard G. Dunlap’s sister), tell how badly the farm land washed into gullies in West Tennessee, at Gadsden, where her family and kin lived, most of them being farmers. that with the lure of opportunity farther west motivated their decision to go.”

Another reason was yellow fever. In the Jackson, Tennessee, public library, there is a book, “A History of the Yellow Fever”, published by a Memphis newspaper in 1879. Its contents are described thus: “The Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878 in Memphis, Tennessee”. Embracing a complete list of the dead, the names of the doctors and nurses employed, names of all who contributed money or means…together with other data, and lists of the dead elsewhere.” Among these lists is: “Gadsden, Tennessee, population 350, number of cases, 6,, deaths, 4.”

Geneva (Kee) Jones of Henderson, Tennessee, wrote Ira G. Dunlap, Jr. , of Lubbock, Texas, a grandson of Hilliard G. Dunlap: “Your great-grandfather, Thomas Cornatzar, and my grandfather, Jim Cornatzar, were brothers, and lived across the road from each other in Crockett County, near a town called Gadsden. Your father was born there in a log cabin. Your grandmother only had one brother. He took yellow fever and died. (This was George Cornatzar, only 24, not yet married, whose name is listed as one of those Gadsden dead in 1878.) After the death of this only son, they were all so sad, that they decided to move, when your father was one year old, to Russellville, Arkansas.”

Norma Alda Dunlap, of Gilroy, California, writes that her father, Jesse Lee Dunlap, (Hilliard G.’s brother), was a good-sized boy, when the ten to twelve covered-wagon caravan left West Tennessee for Pope County, Arkansas. She said they crossed the Mississippi river north of Memphis, as there was yellow fever in that city.

W. Herbert Riead continues: “Tradition has it that a small child died on the move. Nothing remains as to what part of the journey this tragedy occurred, but the child, a daughter, was buried along the way.” Novella (Kee) Jones told him that it was a child of her grandfather, John Granville Kee. Veda (Dunlap) Stanbery remembers her grandmother, Julia, telling her that they stayed a day or so, where the child was buried, out of respect, before traveling on.

Clyde Hilliard Dunlap, Jr. continues: “The trip took six weeks. I remember my grandmother talked of a couple of events. At one river crossing they had a run-in with horse thieves. They closed the wagons together and had an all night shoot-out, but at daylight the thieves rode off and the party went on.”

“She, Julia, said there were not many people along the way, but those they did run across were very glad to see folk from the East. At one point they were invited into a home, and offered breakfast, which consisted of yellow pancakes, made of pumpkin. She said that the young ladies of the party started to giggle at how “back-woodsy” these people were. She had heard of everything but pumpkin pancakes.”

Geneva (Ellington) Vermillion says further: “I remember my mother telling me how elated they were, as they progressed into Arkansas, to see rocks by the wayside, being so pleased that they picked up the rocks and put them in their wagons. However, it was not long before the affinity for rocks vanished. There were so many of them, making the trail so rough, they threw them all out. The wagon train made its way to Russellville, Arkansas, where they settled, most of them in the country, my parents on a farm on the Dover road.”

Norma Alda Dunlap says: “My father’s family settled on a farm west of Russellville; then they bought a farm east of Russellville, some six miles out from town, where my father grew up. Life was centered around one building where meetings, church and school were conducted.” “An ideal rural community” was how he referred to it.

Hilliard G. Dunlap’s health was poor. He was unable to do heavy farm chores. for a time he peddled merchandise from a wagon. Later he went to work in a Russellville store. Hilliard G.’s grandson, Rev. Wm. A. Dunlap, of Phoenix, Arizona, writes: “My father, Carl Dunlap, Sr., told me of his boyhood in Russellville, Arkansas… His father, (Hilliard G.), was clerking in White’s Store for $30 per month, supporting a family of himself, his wife, and five children.” Clyde Hilliard Dunlap, Jr., recounts that, nevertheless in those years, some $3,000 was set aside. Wm. A. Dunlap adds, “money Hilliard’s wife, (Julia), had saved through her extreme frugality.”

Between 1880 and 1892, many of the young people, who made the trip were married in Pope County, Arkansas: In 1882, Nancy Taylor, 16, to George Ashmore, 23; 1883, Lizzie Dunlap, 17, to John Wm. Brewer, 24; 1886, James Monroe Taylor, 24, to Georgia Reaves, 18; 1887, Christopher Reaves, 21, to Sarah Newton, 20; 1891, David Taylor, 19, to M. Alice Hughes, 21 and Edward Hall Dunlap, 18, to Sarah Hughes.

Those who died and were buried in Pope County, Arkansas, were: In 1883, Wm. (Billy) Dunlap, aged 51; 1886, Thomas Rooker Cornatzar, aged 60; and at least one child, Jesse Ellington (1886-1890), aged four.

In the early 1890’s Hilliard G. Dunlap was contemplating a new move, this time to what was later to become Oklahoma. It seemed a new chance for broadening opportunities. He had been in contact with his uncle, John W. Taylor’s sons, Bela Jeffrey (1868-1928) and Hervey Walter (1871-1940). This Taylor family, as far as we can ascertain, were residents of Crockett County, Tennessee, until 1892.

Bela J. and Hilliard G. traveled together to the Indian Territory, exploring. They selected a town, Wagoner, in the Creek Nation. Geneva (Ellington) Vermillion states: “The Missouri Pacific Railroad had been built from Russellville, Arkansas to Wagoner, Indian Territory. That with the M.K. and T. Railroad running north and south made Wagoner a good prospect for the future.”

Before 1887 the Kee family had returned permanently to Tennessee. By 1892 Thomas Turner Taylor was nearing 60, with all his children married and settled. He did not uproot again, nor did the Reaves. All the other, still living, whom we have identified as making the original trip from West Tennessee to Pope County, Arkansas, would by 1896, be in or near Wagoner, together with husbands, wives and some additional eleven children.

These children, born during the stay in Pope County, Arkansas, were: Hilliard G. and Julia (Cornatzar) Dunlap’s, Carl Weaver Dunlap, Sr. (1882-1943), Ada Florence (Dunlap) Riead (1884-1971), Ethel May (Dunlap) Avigliano (1887-1948), Clyde Hilliard Dunlap, Sr. (1889-1958); Lemuel G. and Mary Ann (Dunlap) Ellington’s, Emmit E. Ellington (1882-1895), W. Alvin Ellington (1884-1949), Ora Mae Ellington (1889-??), Vernon B. Ellington (1892-1932); John Wm. (1858-?) and S. L. E. (Lizzie) (Dunlap) Brewer’s, Willie Herbert Brewer (1884-??), Mace E. Brewer (1890-??); Edward Hall and Sarah (Hughes) Dunlap’s, Minnie Lee (1892-1900).

On the original move from Tennessee to Arkansas, housing for the newcomers must have been a problem. W. Herbert Riead informs us that before this new relocation, Hilliard G. Dunlap and Bela J. Taylor purchased, in Wagoner, the Bernard, a three-story, frame hotel, largely for the families to live in, temporarily, until they could buy, or build homes. I remember my wife, Ada, telling of her early recollections of cowmen from Texas, who had shipped cattle to Wagoner to graze during the summer months, staying there, together with local cowboys.

“The women and children (from Russellville) came the 150 miles to Wagoner by train. The men brought the livestock, farm implements, etc., over the country roads which at that time were probably pretty rough.” The first arrivals, of the thirty-three who would come from Arkansas to Indian Territory, were there by November 24, 1892, the birth date of Hilliard G.’s son, Bonnie Cyrus (1892-1895).

From Crockett County, Tennessee, to join this group came the family of John W. and Irena (Follis) (1850-1931) Taylor; their sons, Bela J. and Hervey W.; their daughter, Ursula May (1873-1937) with her husband, Hilliard Benjamin Raines (1865-1955), a son of Wm. (Billy) Dunlap’s sister, Mary Ann (Dunlap) Raines and Erasmus Benjamin Raines (1833-1896).

Ona C. Raines, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a daughter of Ursula (Taylor) Raines, writes:; “H. B. Raines said, one day, that they came to Indian Territory in 1892. He believed there were four or five wagons in the group. He and is wife lived at the old Bernard Hotel until his brick house was built.”

Geneva (Ellington) Vermillion continues, “It was while working at the Bernard Hotel, that my sister, Parthenia, fell in love with and married Bela J. Taylor.” Bela J.’s brother Hervey W., married Julia (Cornatzar) Dunlap’s sister, Louisa Cornatzar, in 1893. Their first child, Ina (1894-1972), was born in the hotel.

A new, good life had begun for the pilgrims. Hilliard G. Dunlap’s family would have thirty years in Oklahoma, mostly prosperous and happy. After his death in 1921, his wife and their children, now with families of their own, (W. Herbert Riead, a son-in-law since 1912, was now one of them), moved on to California. There, years later, Hilliard G.’s wife, Julia (Cornatzar) Dunlap, would tell their grandchildren about the past,–the travels and adventures in the new countries, and of happy times as a child and young person in West Tennessee.

Shortly before Earl T. Dunlap’s death in September 1976, W. Herbert Riead again visited him and his wife Mary, in Crockett County, Tennessee. This time, he brought with him a valued friend, his wife’s first cousin, Wm. Earl Dunlap, of Haskell, Oklahoma, born 1897, in Wagoner, Indian Territory. This cousin had been following the genealogical discoveries made over the months, and had provided the data for his father’s branch of the family tree.

Thus two Earl Dunlaps met. Earl T. Dunlap was the son of James M. Dunlap’s son, James Kendrick Dunlap (1862-1949). Wm. Earl Dunlap was the son of Wm. (Billy) Dunlap’s son, Edward Hall Dunlap. The father and grandfather of one had remained in Crockett County, Tennessee, and likely bid farewell to the father and grandfather of the other when they departed, in 1879 or 1880, for Arkansas and eventually Oklahoma.

Earl T. Dunlap, Wm. Earl Dunlap, Mary (Williams) Dunlap, (Wm. Earl Dunlap was, of course, also related to Mary (Williams) Dunlap, through Rebecca (Williams) Taylor), W. Herbert Riead, and others, visited the Rosamon Cemetery, near Gadsden. There the two Earls stood beside the grave of their great grandparents, Wm. D. and Mary (Hefley) Dunlap, and saw the newly erected headstone, marking the gravesite of their great great grandmother, Margaret (Hamilton) Hefley (click here to view headstone).

This monument, designed by Earl T. Dunlap, jointly financed by him and W. Herbert Riead, the latter in his wife’s memory, set out the important facts of Margaret (Hamilton) Hefley’s life, which had included an earlier immigration:
Margaret Hamilton Hefley, wife of Michael Hefley, born 1774, died after 1860, came to Gibson County, Tennessee, from Chester County, South Carolina, 1838, children of Michael and Margaret Hamilton Hefley;
Mary Hefley married William D. Dunlap
Nancy Agnes Hefley married George Let(d)singer
Sarah Hefley married John Carter
Elizabeth Hefley married John D. Rosamon
William Henry Hefley married Margaret S. Boyd
James Madison Hefley married Rebecca Hamilton and Rebecca Ferguson
Henry W. Hefley married Elizabeth James and Sarah Bradford”
The present remembered the past, with respect and affection.
