This family is very large and hard to layout in short form. I could extend most of these families much further but it is against the rules to include anyone still living. There is much research remaining to be done on these families but I’m not getting any younger and the years are passing rapidly. I’ve made a few corrections and some new discoveries since my 1997 book,”The Gillilands of Western Crockett Co. Tn.”
I hope you enjoy viewing “Gilliland & Kin of Crockett Co. Tennessee”, including several photos.
I want to publicly thank Natalie Huntley, for her assistance & patience getting this family history online. She is a beautiful lady at heart.
I also thank Mrs. Diane Brown for sharing information on the Riley family.

SECTION #1My Great Great Grandparents:
James Gilliland age 38, born 1812 in Tennessee [View Tombstone] and wife Sarah (Black) Gilliland age 35, born 1815 in South Carolina are found in 1850 Henry County, Tn. in the rural community of Blood River, not far from Buchannan and northeast of Paris, Tn. James was a farmer and preacher by (occupation) and was preacher of the Blood River Christian Church, (taken from the book, “History of Henry County Churches”, by E. McLeod Johnson).
James & Sarah had 10 children, 9 born in Tennessee and 1 born in Missouri:
1. John F. Gilliland – born 1831 Tn. – my Great Grandfather moved from Henry Co. Tn. to Crockett Co. Tn.
2. Elizabeth – born 1834 Tn. – no information
3. Samuel G. – born 1836 Tn. – moved to Texas then Arkansas, more information below
4. Mary – born 1839 Tn. – no information
5. Tabitha Jane – born 1841 Tn.- moved to Missouri with the family
6. Alexander C. – born May,1846 Tn. – moved to Missouri with the family, more information below
7. Emmantha – born 1849 Tn. – no information
8. William T. – born 1852 Tn. – moved to Missouri with family
9. James H. – born 1854 Tn. – moved to Missouri with family
10. (Ben) Benjamin – born 1859 in Missouri
I searched for several years to find where this family moved to and finally found them in Mo., Ar. & Texas.
James & Sarah left Henry Co. Tennessee sometime after 1854 and moved across the Mississippi River into Missouri. I could not find this family in 1860, but I find them in 1870 Carroll County, Missouri which is several miles west of St. Louis. In 1870 James was age 59 and Sarah was 56. James was a farmer and the children remaining at home in 1870 are: Tabitha Jane age 29; Alexander C. age 23; William T. age 18; James H. age 16; & (Ben) Benjamin (born in Missouri) age 11
I don’t know what happened to Elizabeth, Mary or Emmantha, perhaps they remained in Tennessee and I may yet find what happened to those girls.
Lets’ look at children numbers 1, 6, & 9 from the numbered list above.
# 1 – John F. Gilliland – born 1831 Tn.
Made his home in western Crockett Co. Tn. We will look at his large family and descendants in Section three of this writing.
# 6 – Alexander C. Gilliland – born May 1846 Tn.
I don’t know where or how, but Alexander lost one of his arms but he could tie his shoes with one hand. He came back to Crockett Co. Tn. at least 3 times to visit his brother John F. & wife Sarah Gilliland and their descendants. My father said Alexander would always bring the children some candy. I learned from a descendant in Hill, Mo. that Alexander was the 2nd husband of a lady named Rebecca. 1900 – I find the first evidence of his children in 1900 Carroll County Missouri. In 1900 Alexander C. was a widower, born May, 1846, was age 54 and his son Joseph Gilliland, age 18, born Aug.1881 in Mo. is living with him. Joseph’s mother was also born in Mo. 1910 – Alexander, now age 63, a widower, still living in Missouri in the home of his daughter Alice (Gilliland) Hull age 26 born 1883/84 in Mo. and her husband Herbert Hull age 31 and their children: Herbie H. age 9, Cordie B. age 8, and Alex E. age 1. Living next door to the Hull family is Alexander’s son, Joseph Gilliland now age 29 born 1881 in Mo. and wife Stella age 20, born 1890 in Mo.,. Joseph & Stella now have one son, Glin, age 1 born 1909 in Mo. 1920 – Alexander C. Gilliland, now age 73, retired, living alone in the township of Hill, Mo., Carroll Co., but he lives in the same township as his children, Joseph & Alice, and his grandchildren.
Crockett County, Tn. was officially established in 1872 from parts of Dyer, Gibson, Haywood & Madison counties.
Chestnut Bluff,Tn., located mid-western Crockett County,(originally part of Dyer Co.), is within walking distance of the south fork of the “Forked Deer River”. Chestnut Bluff became a large village and river landing point where goods were received, shipped or traded, also a voting precinct. As the village grew there were doctors, drug stores, general stores, post office, cotton gin, grist mill, saw mill, barber shop, blacksmith, and even a graveyard, Church, and saloon, but not in that order.
Frog Jump, Tn., It has been said many times that folks in and around Frog Jump are nearly all kin to each other, after studying this family line you will probably say the same. Frog Jump is located in south-western Crockett Co.,(originally part of Haywood Co.), is a short distance from the south fork of the” Forked Deer River”. The people here are said to be a settled type of folk, but don’t get-um riled because they all like to hunt and they all stick together. In the early days there were hundreds of acres of forest and underbrush all along the river bottom; and the river itself was full of fish and easy to catch. The contour of the land was good and the soil was fertile. All this made an ideal area in which to settle, farm and raise a family. Here was wild game and fish for food, trees for erecting buildings, heating and cooking, good grass for the livestock, good neighbors, and necessary supplies could be obtained a short distance away at Chestnut Bluff or at Frog Jump. So without further ado, let’s stop off here and meet some of my kin folks that settled in Western Crockett County Tennessee.

SECTION # 5The Bailey Family
Robert (Bob) Edward & Maggie Lee (Cox) Bailey Family [View Photo]
Excerpt from Bailey family history compiled by my aunt Elizabeth Bailey, deceased.
My maternal G-G-Grandfather;
James Allen Bailey came from England and settled in Abingdon, Virginia. Legend goes that he once owned nearly all the town of Abingdon, Va. but when he revisited England he got into gambling and lost nearly everything.
James Allen Bailey, born Sept. 6, 1817—died March 10, 1887 age 70. He married on June 15, 1838 in Va. to Harriet Sue White born Nov. 15,__?_,– died Aug. 12, 1862.
They had 13 children: 5 daughters & 8 sons:
(1) Walter Warren Bailey, July 17, 1839-July 8,1863, killed in the Civil War (2) Laura White Bailey, 1841-1870 (3) Thomas White Bailey, July 22, 1842-Mar. 15, 1864 also killed in the Civil War (4) Oscar Shaver Bailey 1844-1919 (5) William Hill Bailey 1845-1863 (6) Harriet Virginia Bailey 1846-__?__ (7) Louisa Florence Bailey 1848-1880 (8) James Bailey 1850-__?__ (9) Gustavus Lampkins Bailey Nov. 14, 1851-__?__ (10) Milton White Bailey 1853-__?__ (11) Frank Bailey 1855-__?__ (12) Ella Bailey 1857-__?__ (13) Corena Dixie Bailey 1861-1889.
My maternal Great Grandfather
Gustavus Lampkins Bailey married Frances Virginia O’Bryan from somewhere in middle Tn. and she was a one armed school teacher. Frances got her arm caught in a sorghum mill when she was very young and had to be amputated. Gustavus was a graduate of Emory & Henry College at Emory, Va. and he also taught school.
After Gustavus & Frances married, James Allen Bailey disowned his son for marrying a one-armed working girl. Gustavus & Frances ( and a brother Oscar Shaver Bailey) moved to Texas via covered wagon. Being dissatisfied in Texas they moved back to the flatlands of Dunklin county, Missouri where My maternal Grandfather (Bob) Robert Edward Bailey was born on July 18, 1889. Bob’s mother died when he was 5 years old (1894) and his father died 2 years later (1896) leaving 5 orphaned children.
Bob & siblings lived with his aunt Jenny Hayes, which was a disaster, until his older sister Harriet married Charlie Koonce of near Halls, Tn. and took them in. Later Bob went to live with his sister Sue and husband Joe Moody at Chestnut Bluff, Tennessee. They were neighbors to the Cox family.
Let’s stop here and talk a little about the Cox family.
Edwin Leetin Cox was the son of Thomas Cox and wife Annie King. Edwin Leetin Cox married Callie Donnie Nunn sometime in the mid-seventies, abt. 1875. Calllie Donnie Nunn, born Jan. 23, 1855 was the oldest daughter of Joel Henry Nunn & wife Margaret Eleanor (Burke) Nunn who married abt. 1853/54.
After Callie Donnie was born came Mary (Nunn) Farmer, Eleanor (Nunn) Parker, Maggie Elizabeth (Nunn) Yearwood and baby Joel Henry Nunn ll, born abt. 1863. When baby Joel was only 2 days old the Yankees came and took everything.
Let us now go back to the neighbors of Joe & Sue Moody with whom Bob Bailey was living, these neighbors being Edwin Leetin and Callie Donnie (Nunn) Cox who had several children;
Ella, Thomas, Nina, Cecel, Earl, May, Maggie Lee Cox (my grandmother), Edna & Egbert (twins) and Mary the youngest.
Bob Bailey was much attracted to black haired, blue-eyed Maggie Lee Cox and when her father Edwin Leetin Cox and family left the farm at Chestnut Bluff (Maggie’s birthplace) to move to Bemis, Tn., he invited the orphaned boy (Bob) to go along. Bob needed no second invitation, he went, and there in the little cotton town of Bemis, Tn. (Bob) Robert Edward Bailey & Maggie Lee Cox were married on Dec. 13, 1908. He was 19 and she was 17, it was a wonderful marriage that lasted for 11 children and 56 years.
Bob & Maggie Bailey’s 11 children:
(1) first birth premature girl (2) (my mother) Callie Frances, May 24,1910 (3) Edwin O’Bryan, May 20,1912 (4) Sallie May, July 18,1914 (5) Maggie Elizabeth, Nov.24, 1916 (6) Robert Thomas, Nov. 24, 1918 (7) Tracy Moran, Jan.28, 1921–died age 2 May, 1923 (8) Annie Laura, Nov.5,1923-June 21, 2011 (9) Millicent Faye, Nov.19, 1925 (10) Bascomb Donald, May 5, 1928 (11) Truma Rowena, May 23, 1933.
Annie Laura was the last member of this family to go and they will all be remembered and missed.

Henry Riley age 13 and Mervie Riley age 11 and also Ferona’s brother Ben, now age 50, who seemed to always stay with her as far back as I have checked. Descendants said Chester L. Baker was not a good provider, causing Ferona to loose the farm.
A Riley reunion was held on June 18, 2011 at Archers Chapel Methodist Church in Crockett Co. Tn. and was a big success.
