Smith, Charles, Sr F (1801 – 1878) Co. C. 1st TN Mtd Infantry, Federal Army. Discharged 1864 for frostbite in feet. Widow, Isabelle (Hargett) Smith (1827 – 1899) drew pension until her death in 1899. She was his second wife. They were married 24 Dec 1847 Smith (now Putnam) Co. in home of her father Holden Hargett.

KIA Jackson, Mississippi 17 July 1863, volunteered for rear guard action against advancing Union troops while the remainder of Gen. Joseph Johnston’s troops retreated across the river the night of 16-17 July 1863 to escape encirclement. No body was recovered. There is a possibility that he may be buried with the unknown Confederate dead at Greenwood Cemetery in Jackson MS. His widow and two daughters returned to Giles Co. to live with her father, where they lived the rest of their lives.
