Elizabethton, named for the wife of Landon Carter (namesake of the county), is Carter County’s seat. It was established on the site of the historic Wataugah Settlement.
Hint: The location is pronounced with all short vowel sounds and accent on the fourth syllable: uh-liz-uh-BETH-tun.
Elizabethton in the 1800s
From the Pinterest page: "This is the oldest photograph of Elizabethton that I know of. The image dates to the 1800s. The antebellum courthouse was built in 1852. The West side of the Doe River, bare in the image, was not developed until after a new (15th) district was created specifically for the West side in 1897, five years after the covered bridge was built. Note there was no Elk Avenue bridge then. At some point in this time frame, a Co-Operative Town Company began selling ten million dollars of stock in Elizabethton." // source: https://www.pinterest.com/jennifercarr3/

Elizabethton had its largest growth boom and came to international prominence in the 20th Century. German company J.P. Bemberg opened American Bemberg in 1926, and its affiliate, Vereinigte Glanzstoff Fabriken, built the American Glanzstoff Corporation factory, later known as North American Rayon Corporation.
