Elizabethton Community
Elizabethton, named for the wife of Landon Carter (namesake of the county), is Carter County’s seat. It was established on the site of the historic Wataugah Settlement.
Hint: The location is pronounced with all short vowel sounds and accent on the fourth syllable: uh-liz-uh-BETH-tun.

Elizabethton had its largest growth boom and came to international prominence in the 20th Century. German company J.P. Bemberg opened American Bemberg in 1926, and its affiliate, Vereinigte Glanzstoff Fabriken, built the American Glanzstoff Corporation factory, later known as North American Rayon Corporation.
