Elizabethton Community
Elizabethton, named for the wife of Landon Carter (namesake of the county), is Carter County’s seat. It was established on the site of the historic Wataugah Settlement.
Hint: The location is pronounced with all short vowel sounds and accent on the fourth syllable: uh-liz-uh-BETH-tun.
Watauga Old Fields marker
Located on the lawn in front of the Carter County Courthouse in Elizabethton, TN it reads: 'Where the Watauga Association was formed in 1772, being the first place west of the Alleghenies where men joined together in a written compact for civil government and for the preservation of their ideals of liberty.' (then it lists the thirteen elected commisioners). Elizabethton had its largest growth boom and came to international prominence in the 20th Century. German company J.P. Bemberg opened American Bemberg in 1926, and its affiliate, Vereinigte Glanzstoff Fabriken, built the American Glanzstoff Corporation factory, later known as North American Rayon Corporation.
