1840 Census Surnames Beginning with N & O

This index of heads of households was compiled by Jackie and Dawn Trivette Peters, ©1997.

The 1840 census is the first census after the 1836 Tennessee State Convention dropped the Captains and local militia companies and adopted civil districts. In 1836, Johnson County was formed from the eastern part of Carter County causing the 1840 census of Carter County to be smaller than the 1830 census. Carter County still contained what is now the eastern section of Unicoi County.

The listing contains the names of the heads of households, page number from the original census record, a list of males and females by age range.  This format was created so researchers will not have to count positions on the form.

Some of these names were difficult to translate. If you do not find a person in this index that you think should be there, we suggest that you consult the original census records and draw your own conclusions. Also, please take special care i n how you look up a name. We have enclosed in brackets [ ] what we think is the correct name. Dugger was spelled Dugar, Bomans and Bowmans were both listed, Goodwins are listed as Gudins, etc….
