Year 1859, Petition Number 4_
To the Honorable the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee
The undersigned Citizens of the County of Bradley respectfully represent to your Honorable Body; That for and during the year 1859 they have suffered great inconvenience in the payment of taxes and in other small dealings for the want to a suitable currency, that since the Bank of Tennessee has been restricted from the issuance of small bills, their place has been supplyed by the small bills of the banks of other states which, for the greater part, are neither convertible nor usable. We cannon pay taxes with them nor exchange them for specie. Discarding therefore all theoretic and merely speculative opinions, and relying for our guide upon actual experience, we most earnestly entreat your Honorable Body to remove from the Bank of Tennessee the restrictions in relation to the issuance of small bills at as early a period as may be practicable.
