QUINN

Date: Monday, 29 September 2003, at 5:46 p.m.
My ancestor Peter P. QUINN purchased 86 acres of land in Bradley County in 1863 known as the “Thomas OFFICER Place”. It was 3 tracts of land—2-40 acre tracts and one 6 acre. I believe it was on Springtown Road, near the Polk Co line??? Recently on a trip to Cleveland Library in Bradley Co I tried to find information on Mr. OFFICER and could find no Thomas listed, would anyone have any knowledge of this man. Thanks for any help.

Forgive me if this goes through twice. Usually the responses show up immediately after they are posted, and this one hasn’t, so I’m posting it again to be sure Martha gets it.
I’m sorry, Martha, but there are no Swansons in the 1860 index. I also looked for Joshua and Elizabeth in the cemetery books, and they are not listed. The only Swansons there are Ora E., Phillip O., and Laura J.

Is anyone researching the SWANSON surname? Any of them in Bradley! Specifically interested in Elizabeth & Joshua, both b. 1813 NC. I believe their son George b. 1848 is my elusive ggfather who has been my roadblock for 4 years, had no clue where to look until this week when I found an Ancestry every name index to the 1870 U.S. census. Any help would be most appreciated. Martha in Atlanta

In Response To: Doss Harris (Wanda Anderson)
I think Doss (or Dorsey, b. 18 Oct 1878 in McMinn Co.) was the adopted son of Wm. Thomas Harris and his wife Mary Jane Parker. The 1880 McMinn Co. census (pg 426C) shows him in the Harris household as Doss Parker, a nephew and son of 18 year old Alice Parker who was the unmarried sister of Tom Harris’s wife Mary. All later enumerations show him as Doss Harris. I have no further info on his mother Alice. From the little that I’ve found on the Parkers, Mary was born in Sparta, White Co., TN in Dec 1859. She married Tom Harris in McMinn Co on 12 Apr 1872. My mother-in-law who was raised in Cleveland, TN, remembers Doss Harris as a well regarded member of the community. If you have other info on this family I would appreciate hearing from you.

Family tradition says my gggrandfather, Nelson Coffey, b. 1818, Bradley Co. TN. 1840 census lists Nelson Coffey as a single man living alone engaged in agriculure. 1850 census lists Nelson Coffey as “head of household” with wife, Lavina, (9 years his senior) with nine children, the oldest being 20 years of age. Two more children were born to Nelson and Lavina, Jesse Edards, (My ggrandfather), and James P. Coffey. Family tradition says Lavina’s surname was Blackburn. Is this her maiden name or her name from a previous marriage? Where and who were Nelson Coffey’s parents realizing Bradley Co. was not formed till 1836 from Indian Lands? I know of two cemeteries in Chatata Valley: New Friendship Baptist and Taylors Cemetery. There may be more. There is no John or Martha Cowden listed in the Bradley Co. cemetery book by Ross. I was wrong–there are some John Cowdens in Vol. II of the book–Fort Hill Cemetery, but the middle initials are wrong (not L.), and the birthdates are wrong. There is a William H., son of J. N. & M. Virginia, this won’t be a definitive answer, but maybe it can serve as a clue. I have only an index for Bradley 1860, but I do see a Mary England. Family 1301 includes: Elizabeth, John, Mary, Rebecca, and Sarah. Family 1300 next door includes: Frances, Horace, John, Joseph, and Virginia. On the other side is family 1302 with one person, Milly. Since the names are in alpha order, there is no way to tell who is the head of household.
There is no Mary England in the 1870 index.

I’m looking for info on John Lowery Cowden, born 4/22/1823 and died 6/15/1864. He was in a Confederate soldier from Bradley County. His wife was Martha Linn Smitb. I have no information on his parents. He had brothers James and William. Does anyone have information about a Chatata Valley Cemetary? I have some information on the Baker family including WHH Baker.

Looking for any info on parents of Jasper Newton Acree, born ca 1839-40 in Bradley Co TN (per Civil War Pension Papers). His father died before his birth and his mother died when Jasper was about 4 years old. The only Acree family in the right place at the right time were a Lewis and Rhoda Wiggington Acree who married 8-25-1825 in Rhea CO, TN. Lewis is on the 1830 Hamilton CO Census. His wife Rhoda (Rody) is head of household on the 1840 Bledsoe CO Tn Census. By 1850, Newton J. Akery (my Jasper) is living in the household of William and Elizabeth McPherson of Bradley Co. Jasper later moved to Ky and Married Mary Caroline Cravens of Russell Co. They later pruchased a farm in neighboring Metcalfe Co Ky and lived their until their death in the early 1900’s. If there are any researchers out there that might have a clue to Jasper’s parentage, I would love to exchange info with you.
