Sherry, Thanks for lookup…right name but I’m trying to find next generation, specifically John Burk Jr’s son, John Burk III b.1839 TN & also his brother James Burk b.1833. Having trouble finding these 2 young men. Have reason to believe one or both might have gone to Texas as their father made a trip to Texas in Dec 1862-Jan 1863 to get a daughter-in-law and contracted cholera on the boat ride home, was put off in Louisana, died there (29 Jan 1863) and buried on the banks of the Red River. Can’t find a name for d-i-l he went after or if she came back with him. He had 4 sons but John III & James are only ones who were/maybe married by 1863. Could you please check your 1860 index for a Stephen Crawford Jones b.1826 TN w/wife Elizabeth b. 1829. This if Rev.John Burk’s oldest child & I’ve only been able to find her in 1850 Bradley Co.TN living next door to her parents. Thanks again for your help. Do you tie into this family ? Becky

I am trying to find out info on my g-grandfather, Andrew Jack Shoemaker (changed from Shoemake/Shewmake or Shumock) born in Tennessee in May 1860 and a Cherokee. He was in Hopkins County TX in Oct 1886 when he married my g-grandmother, Frances Fannie Eudora Rippy. They had five children; Mary Melissa (Mellie), William Noah Elmer, John Bascom, Eva Mae or Maud (born & died in infancy in Polk Co ARK 1900) and my grandmother, Era Andrew. I have them in Polk County ARK on the 1900 census, but do know they went back to Hopkins County TX since my grandmother was born there in 1902. He left Fannie either before or after Era was born in 1902 (she re-married to Geo. Benedict in Lamar Co TX in 1903) We believe he went to Oklahoma but not sure. His parents came and told about some kind of trouble in OK. They left and then shortly after so did he. I need to find out his birth info or anything about his family.

George Muster-In the Confederate Army on December 7th 1864, shows residence as Limestone, Bradley Co.TN. His name is shown as G. M. Roberts on Muster-roll. That is a mistake in the way the middle initial was looked at in his signature. He was a Private in Co. D, 5th McKenzie’s Tennessee Cavalry. After the war George married Nancy C Wise in Bartow Co. GA. on June 28th 1868. She was the daughter of William Wise and Mary Ann (Cox) Wise. The 1870 census shows living in Pine-Log, Bartow Co. Ga. George was ask to come to Alabama, by Col. Robert, B. Elizabeth Roberts Jr. was born in Bradley C0. TN. In about 1844 or 45, she is not shown on 1850 census with family, Although, Elizabeth is shown as age 4, under Samuel and Louisa Riggs, next farm house from Roberts family. 1860 census, I first thought she may be a grand daughter but she is showing age 16. Bradley Co. TN, 1860 with the Roberts family, and she is showing in the book TN. Tidbits, as Elizabeth Roberts Jr. a child of N. H. Roberts and an (heir) to his estate. After more research I find Elizabeth JR married Benjamin F Grigsby, a first cousin born in Monroe Co, Sept, 14, 1840, the son of John E and Susan (Roberts) Grigsby. I thank Susan is a sister to Nehemiah H Roberts. Elizabeth and Benjamin Grigsby were married March 9, 1862 in T.N. I thank Elizabeth gave berth to 4 children before her death on August 27, 1872. Hiram Roberts

Date: Sunday, 2 March 2003, at 8:57 p.m.
Hiram Douglas Roberts was born around 1843 in Bradley Co.TN. He is not on the 1850 census with his family. He is on 1860 census, with Elizabeth Roberts and family. He is of age 18. Hiram Douglas Roberts was killed in a battle facing (the enemy) and fell on December 13th 1861 .He was a corp. with Capt. William Snow, 1st Carters Tennessee Mt. Cavalry, (Co. B) (C.S.A.) I can’t find anything on Capt, Snow, or battles they fought. The records show date Muster-In Roll Aug, 7th 1861 in Cleveland TN. date of death, Friday, Dec. 13th 1861. His Personal property, and a will, leaving everything he owned to his youngest brother, George W. Roberts. No mention of where he was killed, or how. His brother, William R Roberts was administrator of Hiram’s will. After further research I came across an article on Lt. Col. Carter’s Diary, part 2 Saturday 14th. Dec. 1861 (quote) Todd started to Nashville, in command of a lot of prisoners, accompanied by Dan Cliffe. Twenty eight of our Cavalry Packet of Snows Command up near Waitsborough, asked at a house, permission to stay all night, the landlord immediately shut the door, and a fire commenced from the windows by 5 or 6 men, several (vollies?) being fired. Two of our men Killed and one wounded and then beat a cowardly retreat leaving the killed on the ground, this happen in Kentucky. I believe one of the killed was Hiram. The next entry in Carter’s Diary was on Sunday 15th at Beech Grove, Ky. near MILL SPRING. Also know as Fish Creek in K.Y. Please, anyone with any information about Hiram. Rebecca Roberts

Date: Sunday, 2 March 2003, at 8:57 p.m.
Rebecca Roberts, born around 1840 or 1844 in Bradley Co TN. 1850 census shows her being 6 years old. The 1860 census shows her being 20 years old. (4 year difference in age) Mrs. Louise (Scales) Brown, the daughter of Seaborn, and Bessie (Roberts) Scales, said her mother had told her that one of the Tennessee Roberts girls had married a man named (Pair.) And the two had moved to Kansas or Texas. I haven’t found anything on 1870 census on this family, but the 1880 census shows William R. Pair in Denton, Texas as 34 years old born TN. and [widowed] with 4 sons and 1 daughter. Sons are Thomas L. age 11, born in TN. James C. age 9, born in TN. Charles E. age 5 born in TN. Andy, age 3 born TN. and daughter Mattie R. age 3mo born TX. This must mean that the mother died after the birth of Mattie R. Also living in the household was Catharine Roberts [widowed], age 50.and born in TN. and Christopher C. Roberts age 33 born in TN. Information came from 1880 United States Census Precinct #3, Denton, Texas FHL Film 1255300 National Archives Film T9-1300 page 105B. I regret to say that my research on this Rebecca turns out not to be our relative. Our Rebecca would have been 36 years old or if the 1860 census is right the age would be 40. I would love to here from family members of Rebecca. Please Call 256-526-6625 or Email ethyl [at] tds [dot] net

Hi’ Thanks for the reply. I found the listing for the Lee Cemetery. My GGrandparents are buried on one side of the cemetery. We have visited there. I was very shoccked at the disrepair of some of the tombstones. We took pictures of many og the tombstones. There is another Lee cemetery on the west side of Cleveland, TN., up on a hill. My GreatGreatGrandfatherr is buried there. His name is William James Carter. His daughter, Elizabeth married my GGrandfather, Rufus Wrinkle. William was the first sheriff of Bradley County.

Please help me find the parents of John Harrison Robertson, (1801-1857). He was born in NC. He was Bradley Co. Clerk of Court and married Naomi Shelton. They had ten children–most of whom are buried in Cleveland. His son, James Shelton Robertson married Elvira, daughter of Euclid Waterhouse. I would like to know if he is related to General James Robertson, founder of Nashville. I understand his father’s name was John. With common names like John and James, it is hard to make connections.

While I don’t have the exact information that you are seeking, there could be a connection between our Cowans:1) James and Mary Elizabeth are names that figure prominently in my data and the general migration pattern from East TN to North TX for some of the Cowans and in that time frame is similar.
My ancestor, William Wallace Cowan (1800-1854)was the son of James A. Cowan(1770s-1841) and Elizabeth(last name unknown). He had three sisters: Evalina Cowan Camp, Mary Elizabeth Cowan McCarty, and Jane M. Cowan Russell along with three brothers: Joseph, John H., and James Archibald Roane Cowan. All married (W.W. Cowan and J.A.R. Cowan each married twice)and all were prolific. They followed, in part, the naming patterns of the Scotch-Irish for their many descendants. I suspect that your ancestor was among the large group of descendants.
The East Tennessee stronghold of James Cowan and his children seemed to be in the Meigs, Rhea, Bradley and McMinn area. Of course, I descend from W.W. Cowan and his son, W.W.Cowan, Jr.(1844-1911) and the latter migrates to Tarrant, then Denton County, TX by 1880. I’ve worked out that line fairly well (of course, needing desperately the ancestry of this James Cowan) but am just beginning on the lines of James sibs. I have a handful of Mary Elizabeths and Mary Anns and James’, but not one matches the dates you provided. Thus, this is not too helpful, but I appreciate your writing and will keep your info on file. I do note in an index of Bradley County Wills(1883-1905)that there is one for James Lacey. Let’s keep diggin’

I am looking for ANY information on my ggrandmother, Mary Elizabeth Cowan. Born June 23, 1871. Died July 2, 1899 in Altoga, Collin County, Texas. Although there are other Cowans buried at Altoga Cemetery, we can not make a confirmed link. They are James M. Cowan(B.10/12/1848), Sara Ann Lacy Cowan 3/2/1843). James and Sarah were married in 1868 in Tennessee, we believe Bradley County.
There is also a Mary A. Cowan Strode buried at Altoga who may be related. B. 3/23/1849, D. 3/27/1921, Married a Jahu Strode (12/8/1818-5/1/1891).
Would appreciate any guidance or information. Thank you! Paulette Lawson chandler

Anita, someone else will probably be able to give you more information, because my 1870 Bradley Co. book is only an index. I will at least go ahead and give you what I can from it. The index simply shows the names of all the members in one family in alpha order.
Calvin is in Dist. 8, Family 16. The other members of this family are Catherine and Lucy.
Coler is in Dist. 6, Family 25. The others are Alfred, Allen, and Edward.
Thomas is in Dist. 9, Family 66. With him are Ephrain, Esther, Jackson, Jane, Susan, and Wesley.
