William P. Bryant, 1826-1906
Posted By: Anne Smith <ahbls8 [at] aol [dot] com>
Date: Sunday, 10 March 2002, at 12:19 p.m.
William Posey BRYANT was born December 25, 1826 in Habersham Co., GA to parents who were both born in GA, according to his census records from 1850 to 1900. His father was also a William Bryant, according to family tradition. Nothing is yet known of his life from birth until he enlisted in the U. S. Army at Calhoun, McMinn Co., TN in November, 1847, to serve in the Mexican War. On his application he listed his occupation as blacksmith. He was most likely working in Calhoun or Charleston, TN, which is just across the Hiwassee River from Calhoun. It is not known where he apprenticed. He left from Athens, TN and was sent to Mexico, where he served at Vera Cruz, Natural Bridge, and San Juan, according to his pension record. His physical description on the pension file is: “…about six feet tall, gray eyes, black hair, dark complexion.”
On March 14, 1850 he married Icie Ann McCARTY, daughter of William and Amilda Looney McCarty of Bradley Co., TN and settled in Charleston, TN, where he lived the remainder of his life. He is listed as a blacksmith on the 1850 Census in Bradley Co. with wife, Icie Ann, an Elizabeth BRYANT, 17, and Daniel FOSTER, 21, blacksmith, in his household. The 1860 Census shows him in Bradley Co. as a blacksmith with an estate valued at $15,000. In his household were wife, Icie Ann, 26, James Wellington Bryant, 9; William McCarty Bryant, 7; Timothy Edward Bryant, 5; Amilda French Bryant, 2; John Lee Bryant, 5/12, and Lucinda KNIGHT, 30.
In late December, 1861 another child, Anne, was born. In January, 1862, Icie Ann McCarty Bryant died and was buried in Fort Hill Cemetary, Cleveland. Anne died in the fall of 1863 and was buried beside her mother.
On April 2, 1863, William married Malissa J.ALEXANDER, daughter of Hamilton Lorenzo and Amanda Adalaide Alexander. The 1870 census has him still listed as a blacksmith with an estate of $30,000. In his household were wife, Malissa, 24; James Bryant, 19; William Bryant, 17; Timothy Bryant, 15, Amilda Bryant, 12; John Bryant, 9; Nannie Adelaide Bryant, 4; McClatchey Alexander Bryant, 2; Lizzie Aiken Bryant 7/12; and Lucinda KNIGHT, 40. 1870 was also the year William built a large, two-story brick home in Charleston, which is still in use today and is very close to the Charleston exit on I-75. He and his family attended Henegar’s Chapel Methodist Church close to Charleston, as did the McCartys and Alexanders. Later he and his family belonged to the Charleston Methodist Church.
In 1877 William was named guardian of Malissa’s nephew Charles ROSS and niece Mary ROSS, children of Malissa’s sister Susan Alexander, who had been married to A.J. Ross. On November 10, 1879 Lizzie Aiken Bryant, 10, died of diptheria and was buried in Henegar’s Chapel Cemetary. On the 1880 census William’s household consisted of Malissa, 34; John, 20; Nannie, 14; Mack, 12, Elizabeth, 6/12; Charles ROSS, 19; Mary ROSS, 9; and Cindia NIGHT, boarder, 50.
William listed his occupation as farmer on the 1900 census and stated that he owned his farm clear of mortgage. Living in his houehold were Malissa, 54; and Elizabeth, 20. Elizabeth later married Charles ITZEL and operated Wayside Antiques on Ocoee Street in Cleveland for many years. She was a member of the UDC through the service of her uncle, A.F.C. Alexander. William P. Bryant died October 23, 1906 and Malissa died August 20, 1912. They are buried in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetary in Charleston, and Lucinda Knight is buried next to them.
William P. Bryant has not yet been linked to any of the N. GA Bryant, Briant, or Bryan families, nor is it known when he migrated from GA to TN. It is not known why his middle name was POSEY or why he gave the middle name AIKIN to one of his daughters. The Elizabeth Bryant on his 1850 census is unidentified, as are Daniel Foster and Lucinda Knight. Any information about these questions or about N. GA>TN migrations 1826-1847, forges/blacksmiths’ apprentices in N. GA, McMinn and Bradley Counties in TN,1840-1880, and BRYANT families in N. GA and in TN would be appreciated. I’ll be happy to share any information I have. Anne Bryant Smith ahbls8 [at] aol [dot] com

In Response To: Brackett and Hoopers, Bradley county TN (Tracy)
Tracy, maybe someone who has the Bradley Co. 1870 census can look something up for you. I have the index only, and an Etha L. HOOPER is listed in District 9, Family 51. The others listed in that family, in alpha order, are Elizabeth J., Genetta, Isaac, James, Kenzie C., and Martha. No indication as to which ones are the parents. (But see below!)
In the 1880 census where Henry and Ethelinda are listed as the parents in family 574, there is an Isaac HOOPER next door in family 575. Hey, I think I’ve solved the question of the parents! At family 589, we have HOOPER: Kinsey, 50; Elizabeth 49; Nettie 14; Martha 11; Allice 7; Andy 4; and Ann GEREN, 80, listed as Kinsey’s mother-in-law. Kinsey was born in TN, his father in VA, and his mother in TN. So in the 1870, Kenzie C. and Elizabeth J. would be the parents. Genetta would be the 14 yr. old Nettie of 1880, and Martha would be the baby who is then 11 in 1880. Let me see if I can find the other brother, James. OK, I’ll bet this is he. Family 592, HOOPER: James 24; Cyntha 20; Oscar 1; and HICKMAN, B. H. 53 (male), boarder.
Now here’s some more information. In the Bradley Co. Heritage book, there’s a family article on Andrew Hooper who was born in TN in 1805 and died in 1866. His wife was Martha SEABOURNE, the daughter of Joseph SEABOURNE and Mary WILHITE. Andrew and Martha’s children were: 1. John, b. 1827; ma. Sarah FARMER. 2. Kinsey C., b. 1828; ma. Elizabeth GEREN. 3. Dialtha, b. 1832; m. T. H. GILBREATH. 4. Jahue, b. 1833; ma. Mary McPHERSON. 5. James, b. 1838; m. Eliza GEREN.
During the Civil War, the five oldest sons, John, Kinsey, Jahue, James, and William, all enlisted in the Union Army. They were assigned to the 8th TN Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Co. A.
Well, I think I’ve found Elizabeth GEREN HOOPER’s father’s name, too, in an article on the GEREN family. Isaac, supposedly a son of Hiram and Susannah GEREN. Isaac married Anna HANKINS. You probably need a copy of the heritage book, because you have hit the jackpot!
If you would like to know more about these families and who submitted the articles, please email me at jb [dot] dooley [at] verizon [dot] net. Barbara

Thank you for the offer. The WOOTENs I have are: Albert S., Bobby, Terry and W.C. Albert S. m. Beulah Penolah HOSKINS and they raised their family around Smith and Fannin Counties in Texas. Are any of these names familiar?
I also have a great many WOODENs in the Tennessee area. The name might be an offshoot. Thanks again!

My HINDMANs are buried at Candies Creek/Eureka Cemetery: Claude Jefferson, Jessie Joe, Eli L., Laura Parthina (Wooden), Luther Franklin, Oscar Worley and Alma Jane (Lee) HINDMAN. It is a good size cemetery. I believe the complete listing is published in one of the books at Cleveland History Library.
